Introduction: A Discovery Through Curiosity

Pakistan's coastline stretches along the Arabian Sea, encompassing sandy beaches, rocky shores, islands, mangrove forests, coral communities, and a remarkable variety of marine organisms. Although much of this environment is familiar to us from the surface, an entirely different landscape exists beneath the water. My interest in Pakistan's marine environment developed through my experiences of diving and exploring different coastal locations and islands, particularly around Karachi and Churna Island. During these visits, I had opportunities to observe underwater rock formations, corals, fish, and other marine organisms in their natural surroundings.

What fascinated me was the amount of life present beneath the surface. At the same time, I could not ignore the environmental problems surrounding these habitats. I observed pollution, damaged corals, and other signs of human disturbance. Some areas appeared to be suffering from considerable environmental pressure, yet marine life continued to exist around them. This contrast left a lasting impression on me.

How could an environment facing pollution and physical disturbance still support such remarkable marine biodiversity? What natural conditions allowed these organisms to survive, and what larger environmental processes might influence their habitats?

I began wondering whether the answers extended beyond the individual reefs, islands, and coastal locations I had visited. One day, while exploring Pakistan's coastline on Google Maps, I noticed a large underwater geographical feature associated with the Indus River: the Indus Submarine Canyon. Its appearance immediately caught my attention. I had previously thought about the Arabian Sea mainly in terms of its visible coastline, islands, and the underwater environments I had personally explored. Seeing the canyon on a map made me think about the much larger underwater landscape that exists beyond recreational diving depths.

I started wondering whether such an enormous underwater formation could influence the marine environment surrounding it. Could its slopes and channels affect ocean currents? Could it influence the movement of sediments and nutrients? Might underwater valleys play a role in where marine animals travel, feed, or gather? Most importantly, could there be any relationship between this canyon and the rich marine biodiversity I had witnessed along Pakistan's coastline? These questions became the starting point for this article. I am not presenting them as scientific findings. They are personal questions and possibilities that emerged from my diving experiences, coastal observations, and curiosity about Pakistan's underwater geography.

1. Pakistan's Coastline: A Marine Environment Full of Life and Contradictions

Pakistan's coastline extends for approximately 1,000 kilometres along the Arabian Sea, from the Indus Delta in Sindh to the Makran coast of Balochistan. Across this coastline are different marine environments, each supporting organisms adapted to its particular conditions. Rocky shores provide surfaces for algae, molluscs, crabs, and other organisms. Sandy environments support burrowing animals and bottom-dwelling species. Mangroves provide shelter and nursery habitats for many fish and invertebrates. Offshore islands and submerged rocky areas support coral communities, reef-associated fish, and other marine life.

Through diving and exploring coastal environments, I have seen parts of this biodiversity firsthand. What I find especially interesting is that marine life is not distributed equally. Some underwater locations appear rich with organisms, while others contain fewer visible species. Even within relatively short distances, the underwater environment can change considerably. These differences made me wonder about the factors responsible for them. Is it the depth of the water? The shape and composition of the seabed? The strength of ocean currents? The availability of nutrients? Or perhaps a combination of several environmental conditions?

I became increasingly interested in understanding not only what organisms live in these environments, but why they are found in particular locations.

Biodiversity Despite Pollution

One of the most striking aspects of my coastal experiences has been observing marine life in places where environmental problems are also visible. Along parts of Pakistan's coastline, pollution, discarded fishing equipment, plastic waste, and other human disturbances affect the marine environment. During my visits, I have observed damaged coral colonies and signs of stress within underwater habitats. Yet these same environments can still contain fish, corals, invertebrates, and other organisms. This made me ask another question:

If Pakistan's coastal waters support so much marine life despite existing environmental pressures, what might these ecosystems look like under healthier conditions?

I do not interpret the continued presence of marine organisms as evidence that pollution is harmless or that these ecosystems are necessarily healthy. An environment can contain considerable biodiversity while simultaneously experiencing ecological decline. Some organisms may tolerate disturbances better than others, and the disappearance of sensitive species may not always be immediately visible. Nevertheless, the biodiversity I have witnessed suggests that these coastal habitats possess considerable ecological importance. It also makes me wonder how much remains undocumented or insufficiently understood. Perhaps we have become so accustomed to seeing pollution along parts of our coastline that we sometimes overlook the living environments beneath it.

For me, observing marine biodiversity alongside environmental degradation has created both curiosity and concern. I want to understand what supports this life, what threatens it, and whether larger oceanographic processes contribute to the conditions in which it exists.

2. Discovering the Indus Submarine Canyon on Google Maps

My interest in the Indus Submarine Canyon did not begin with a research expedition or a scientific publication. It began while I was looking at Pakistan's coastline on Google Maps. I was exploring the geographical features of the coast when I noticed an unusual underwater formation extending into the Arabian Sea near the Indus Delta. Its appearance was different from the surrounding seabed. It resembled a large submerged valley or channel, and I became curious about what it represented. After looking into it further, I learned that the formation was associated with the Indus Submarine Canyon, part of the much larger Indus submarine sedimentary system.

This discovery changed the way I thought about Pakistan's marine geography. I had spent time observing underwater environments near islands and coastal locations, but the canyon made me realize that these familiar habitats exist within a much larger geological landscape. On land, we recognize that rivers, mountains, valleys, and plains can influence the distribution of plants and animals. I began wondering whether underwater geological formations might have comparable importance for marine life. Could an underwater valley influence how water moves? Could it create different environmental conditions at different depths? Might marine organisms gather near particular slopes or channels?

And could any of these processes influence environments farther along Pakistan's coastline? The map itself could not answer these questions. It showed a representation of the seabed, not the movement of water, sediments, or animals. However, it gave me a reason to begin asking them.

3. The Indus Submarine Canyon and the Hidden Geography of the Arabian Sea

The Indus Submarine Canyon is an underwater valley associated with the Indus River system and located offshore of the Indus Delta. It forms part of the broader Indus Submarine Fan, a large accumulation of sediments deposited over geological time. The Indus River carries sediment from its drainage basin toward the Arabian Sea. Some of this material accumulates in coastal and continental shelf environments, while sediment gravity flows can transport material into deeper waters through submarine channels. What interests me is the relationship between these geological processes and the surrounding marine environment.

The seabed is not a uniform surface. It contains slopes, depressions, channels, rocky formations, and sediment-covered areas. These features may influence local water movement, sediment accumulation, and the availability of habitats for different organisms. I wonder whether the Indus Submarine Canyon contains distinct environmental zones supporting different types of marine life. Could its steep slopes provide habitats unlike those of the surrounding seabed? Might some sections accumulate fine sediment while others experience stronger water movement? Could differences in depth, oxygen availability, or food supply affect the organisms living there?

These questions make me interested in studying the canyon through both geology and marine biology.

4. Could the Canyon Influence Pakistan's Coastal Marine Biodiversity?

My diving experiences have shown me that underwater habitats can differ greatly from one location to another. At some sites, rocks and coral structures provide shelter for fish and invertebrates. Elsewhere, sandy or sediment-covered seabeds support different organisms. This made me wonder whether large-scale underwater geography could influence patterns of marine biodiversity. Could the Indus Submarine Canyon affect the distribution of nutrients or organic material in nearby offshore waters? Could its slopes influence water circulation or create conditions that attract certain organisms? Could the canyon support feeding areas for fish, sharks, or marine mammals?

I also wonder whether the canyon could influence marine productivity indirectly through interactions between seabed topography and ocean currents. However, I recognize that an ecological influence near the canyon would not automatically extend to the entire Pakistan coastline. The Arabian Sea is a large and dynamic environment. Local habitats are influenced by numerous factors, including monsoon circulation, water temperature, river discharge, pollution, fishing activity, and coastal geology. My intention is to understand whether the canyon contributes to any of these broader environmental patterns, rather than assume that it controls them.

5. Churna Island: My Observations and Questions About Coral Health

Churna Island has been particularly important in developing my interest in marine ecosystems. During my diving visits, I have observed coral colonies, fish, and other marine organisms living around its underwater rocky habitats. I have also seen pollution, damaged corals, and corals showing signs of bleaching. These observations made me think more seriously about the environmental conditions necessary for coral survival. Corals depend on suitable attachment surfaces and environmental conditions, including temperature, light availability, water movement, and manageable sediment levels. The presence of pollution or damaged coral colonies raises questions about the pressures affecting these habitats.

At first, my questions focused mainly on local human activities and visible environmental conditions. After discovering the Indus Submarine Canyon, I began thinking about whether larger oceanographic processes might also influence coral environments along Pakistan's coast. Could regional currents affect water quality around Churna? Could sediment transported through different parts of the continental shelf influence underwater visibility or coral settlement? Could seasonal changes in ocean circulation contribute to changes in coral habitat conditions? I do not know whether the Indus Canyon has any measurable influence on Churna Island.

Churna is geographically separate from the canyon, and local environmental factors may be much more important. Nevertheless, I believe comparing local coral observations with wider oceanographic information could be worthwhile.

6. Astola Island and the Possibility of Connections Between Coral Habitats

Astola Island, located off the Balochistan coast, is another important marine environment that interests me. Its coral communities and surrounding marine biodiversity raise questions about how different coastal habitats may be connected. Although Churna and Astola are separated geographically, some marine organisms can disperse between habitats through ocean currents. Many coral species reproduce by releasing larvae that may drift through the water before settling on suitable surfaces. This made me wonder whether coral populations along Pakistan's coastline could share ecological connections. Could larvae from one location eventually settle in another?

Could seasonal currents influence the direction and distance of their movement? Might the physical geography of the continental shelf influence where larvae travel or settle? I am also curious about whether differences in sediment conditions, water clarity, and exposure to currents contribute to differences between coral communities at Churna and Astola. The Indus Submarine Canyon may not directly influence these processes, but studying it as part of the wider continental margin could help place these questions in a broader geographical context.

7. Marine Animal Migration: Do Underwater Landscapes Influence Movement?

Another question emerged when I began thinking about the movement of marine animals along Pakistan's coast. The Arabian Sea supports whales, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, tuna, and other species capable of travelling considerable distances. Some animals move seasonally between regions, while others travel between feeding and breeding areas or change depth during daily movements. I began wondering whether underwater geography influences any of these movements. On land, animals may use valleys, rivers, and other geographical features during migration. Could some marine species respond to submarine slopes, continental shelf edges, or underwater channels?

I recognize that marine navigation is complex and that different species respond to different environmental factors. Nevertheless, the possibility interests me.

Whales and Dolphins

Whales and dolphins may travel through offshore waters in search of prey or suitable environmental conditions. Could the slopes surrounding the Indus Submarine Canyon influence prey distribution? If ocean currents interact with the canyon and affect local productivity, might certain marine mammals visit nearby waters more frequently? Could recorded sightings reveal patterns related to seabed depth or the continental shelf edge? These are questions I would like to investigate using animal observation records and bathymetric maps.

Sea Turtles

Sea turtles travel between nesting beaches, feeding areas, and other marine habitats. Pakistan's coast includes important turtle nesting environments, and some turtles undertake long-distance movements through the Arabian Sea. I wonder whether their routes show any relationship with the continental shelf or major underwater geographical features. Could turtles moving between the Sindh and Balochistan coasts encounter environmental conditions associated with the canyon region? Or are their movements primarily influenced by currents, navigation, and the locations of feeding habitats? Comparing turtle tracking records with underwater maps could help explore these possibilities.

Sharks and Migratory Fish

Sharks and migratory fish may respond to prey availability, temperature, currents, and changes in water depth. Could the canyon's surrounding waters provide feeding opportunities for certain species? Might some fish gather near underwater slopes where prey is concentrated? Could fishing observations help identify areas where marine animals occur repeatedly? I would be interested in examining whether any patterns exist between marine animal distribution and the physical characteristics of Pakistan's continental margin.

8. The Unknown Life of the Deep Sea

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Indus Submarine Canyon is that much of its environment lies beyond the depths accessible to ordinary recreational divers. The deeper Arabian Sea presents conditions very different from those found near coastal reefs. Sunlight decreases with depth, pressure increases, and oxygen availability varies considerably across the water column. These conditions influence which organisms can survive in different environments. I wonder what species inhabit the canyon's slopes, sediment-covered areas, and deeper channels. Could there be unusual fish, sponges, invertebrates, or other organisms adapted to these conditions?

Might certain areas support biological communities that differ from those found on the surrounding continental slope? I am particularly curious about the possibility of deep-water coral or sponge habitats, although their presence within the canyon would need to be investigated rather than assumed. The thought that an underwater landscape so close to Pakistan may contain environments I have never seen encourages me to learn more about deep-sea exploration.

9. Ocean Currents, Sediments, and the Movement of Life

The Arabian Sea experiences seasonal oceanographic changes associated with the monsoon system. These changes influence currents, water temperature, nutrient availability, and marine productivity. I wonder whether seasonal circulation affects the relationship between the Indus Canyon and the surrounding continental margin. Could currents transport sediments or nutrients differently during different seasons? Could changing ocean conditions influence the movement of fish or marine mammals? Could seasonal water circulation affect the dispersal of coral larvae between coastal habitats? These questions interest me because they suggest that marine environments are not static.

The conditions observed during one diving visit may differ from those experienced during another season. Understanding these changes could help explain why some organisms appear more frequently at certain times or locations. It could also help distinguish local environmental changes from wider regional processes.

10. Mapping the Seabed and Marine Life

My discovery of the canyon through Google Maps also encouraged me to think about the importance of underwater mapping. Bathymetry allows us to measure and represent the depth and shape of the seabed. A detailed bathymetric map could reveal the canyon's slopes, channels, surrounding continental shelf, and connections to deeper waters. I would be interested in comparing such maps with available records of marine organisms. For example, could the locations of whale and dolphin sightings be compared with seabed depth? Could sea turtle tracking data reveal movement patterns along the continental shelf? Could observations of sharks or migratory fish be examined alongside underwater slopes and channels?

For coastal habitats, could coral distribution be compared with substrate type, water depth, and sediment conditions? I believe combining seabed mapping with biological observations could provide a useful way to investigate these questions. However, any patterns would need careful interpretation. The presence of animals near a particular underwater feature would not necessarily mean that the feature caused them to be there.

11. What I Would Like to Explore Further

If I had access to the necessary scientific equipment, expertise, and research opportunities, I would like to investigate these questions through a combination of ocean engineering and marine ecology. I would begin by examining available bathymetric information for the Indus Submarine Canyon and surrounding continental shelf. I would then study regional ocean currents, sediment distribution, and seasonal environmental changes. For coastal environments, I would like to continue documenting marine organisms through diving observations and underwater photography. My observations around Churna and other coastal locations could provide a starting point for developing more systematic surveys of coral health, biodiversity, pollution, and habitat conditions.

I would also be interested in comparing the biodiversity of different coastal locations, particularly those with varying levels of human disturbance. For the canyon itself, underwater cameras, remotely operated vehicles, and oceanographic instruments could potentially help investigate deeper habitats. Animal tracking records and fisheries observations could be used to explore possible relationships between migration routes and seabed geography. I understand that such investigations would require resources and collaboration beyond what I currently possess. For now, my intention is to organize my questions, improve my understanding, and identify areas that may deserve further scientific attention.

12. Why I Believe Pakistan's Marine Environment Deserves Greater Attention

My experiences along Pakistan's coastline have made me appreciate how much marine life exists beneath waters that many people see only from the shore. The presence of pollution and environmental degradation can sometimes dominate our perception of these places. Yet beneath the surface, coral colonies, fish, invertebrates, and other organisms continue to form complex marine communities. This biodiversity should not make us comfortable with pollution. Instead, it should encourage us to consider what may be at risk. I often wonder how these environments might appear if they experienced less human disturbance and received greater protection.

Would damaged habitats recover? Would sensitive species become more abundant? Could healthier coral communities support greater numbers of fish and other organisms? I also wonder how much of Pakistan's offshore marine environment remains insufficiently explored. The Indus Submarine Canyon reminds me that the coastline visible to us represents only a small part of a much larger underwater world. Understanding that world may require connecting coastal observations with marine geology, bathymetry, ocean circulation, and biological research. I believe such an approach could help us better understand the environmental processes affecting Pakistan's marine ecosystems.

Conclusion: A Question That Began on the Coast and Continued on a Map

My curiosity about the Indus Submarine Canyon began with experiences that, at first, seemed unrelated. I had spent time diving around Pakistan's islands and coastal environments, observing corals, fish, underwater rocks, and other marine organisms. I had also witnessed pollution, damaged corals, and signs of environmental stress. Despite these problems, I continued to encounter marine life, sometimes in places where I had not expected to see such biodiversity. These experiences made me question what allows marine ecosystems to exist and how different environmental conditions influence them. Later, while exploring Pakistan's coastline on Google Maps, I noticed the Indus Submarine Canyon.

Seeing this enormous underwater formation made me consider questions I had not previously connected to my diving experiences. Could the shape of the seabed influence marine biodiversity? Could underwater slopes and channels affect ocean currents, sediment movement, or feeding conditions? Could marine animals respond to these features during their movements? And could any of these processes have indirect connections to coral ecosystems around Churna Island, Astola Island, and other parts of Pakistan's coastline? I do not know the answers. Perhaps some of these connections exist, while others may prove to be weak or entirely absent.

What matters to me is understanding them rather than assuming them.

The canyon caught my attention on a map, but the questions it raised came from what I had already witnessed beneath the waters of Pakistan.

My diving experiences showed me the life that exists along our coastline. The pollution I encountered made me concerned about its future. Discovering the canyon made me wonder about the larger underwater environment in which all this life exists. I hope to continue exploring these questions through observation, mapping, learning, and, where possible, scientific investigation. Because the more I observe Pakistan's marine environment, the more I realize that understanding the organisms we see also requires understanding the underwater world we cannot easily see.

A Diver's View of Churna Island

I have visited Churna Island many times, and each visit has given me a greater appreciation of its natural beauty. Whether viewed from a distance or approached by boat, the island immediately captures attention. Rising from the open waters of the Arabian Sea, it offers a sense of adventure, exploration, and escape from the busy surroundings of Karachi. However, the more frequently I visit, the more I begin to notice something beyond its beauty: the contrast between the life beneath the water and the relatively barren appearance of the land above it.

I have had the opportunity to climb to the top of Churna Island with fellow divers. Depending on the route, the climb can be challenging, requiring patience, balance, and careful footing. Yet reaching the top is rewarding. The surrounding sea stretches toward the horizon, the wind moves across the exposed landscape, and the atmosphere feels peaceful and distant from everyday life. The island is not entirely without vegetation. Large, bushy cactus-like plants and other hardy coastal vegetation can be found growing in certain areas. These plants demonstrate that life has already adapted to the island's difficult conditions.

Nevertheless, much of the landscape consists of exposed rock, dry soil, and scattered vegetation. Shades of brown and grey dominate the land, while the surrounding sea displays a rich variety of blues and greens. This contrast made me wonder whether Churna Island could support a greater diversity of native flowering plants and coastal vegetation without disturbing the natural ecosystem that already exists. Could carefully selected wildflowers add seasonal colour to its rocky landscape? Could suitable coastal plants provide additional shelter and food for insects and birds? Could the same spirit of care extend beneath the water, where marine flowering plants such as seagrasses support fish and other organisms?

These questions became the foundation of this concept.

Understanding Churna Island

Churna Island is located in the Arabian Sea, approximately 9–10 kilometres offshore from the Manjhar Beach area, near the boundary between Sindh and Balochistan. The island is approximately 1.2 kilometres long and 0.5 kilometres wide, with elevations reaching roughly 90 metres above sea level. Although relatively small, it forms an important coastal and marine habitat. Churna Island is uninhabited by permanent human residents, but its surrounding waters attract divers, fishermen, researchers, tourists, and marine wildlife.

In September 2024, Churna Island and its surrounding waters were declared a Marine Protected Area by the Government of Balochistan, covering approximately 98 square kilometres. The island is particularly valuable for its underwater biodiversity. Its rocky seabeds and coral communities provide habitat for reef-associated fish, sea fans, marine invertebrates, and other organisms. Green sea turtles and numerous fish species have also been reported in the surrounding waters. However, this ecological richness faces pressures from marine pollution, fishing activities, industrial influences, rising seawater temperatures, and recreational activities.

While considerable attention is given to the island's underwater environment, its terrestrial vegetation and the relationship between land and sea also deserve careful study.

Bringing Colour and Life to the Island

The central idea of this proposal is simple: to explore whether suitable native wildflowers, grasses, and coastal plants could be established in selected areas of Churna Island where ecological assessment shows that planting would be beneficial. My intention is not to transform the island into a garden or replace its natural rocky landscape. Rather, I would like to investigate whether its existing biodiversity could be supported through carefully planned ecological restoration. Wildflowers could potentially bring seasonal colour to appropriate areas of the island. Native flowering plants may provide nectar and pollen for insects, while their seeds and vegetation could offer food and shelter to certain bird species.

Hardy coastal plants may also help stabilize loose soil in suitable locations, reduce localized erosion, and create small habitats for other organisms. The idea is especially interesting because Churna Island is exposed to strong sunlight, salty winds, limited freshwater, and relatively dry conditions. Any plants introduced through a restoration programme would need to be naturally suited to these challenges. A successful project would therefore depend on identifying species native to the region, understanding the island's existing plant communities, and determining whether additional planting is ecologically appropriate.

The goal should not simply be to make the island greener, but to help it become healthier while preserving its natural identity.

Wildflowers, Coastal Plants, and Their Potential Benefits

Plants perform important ecological functions, even in dry and exposed coastal environments. Native flowering plants can support pollinating insects, including bees, butterflies, and other species adapted to local conditions. These insects may themselves become food for insect-eating birds. Coastal grasses and low-growing vegetation can help bind loose soil through their root systems, reducing erosion where suitable soil is present. Some native coastal plants produce fruits or seeds consumed by birds and other animals. Others provide shade, nesting materials, or shelter from wind and predators.

The potential benefits of carefully selected vegetation include:

• Supporting native insects and pollinators.
• Providing additional feeding opportunities for suitable bird species.
• Increasing the diversity of small terrestrial habitats.
• Helping stabilize loose soil in appropriate locations.
• Encouraging public interest in the island's terrestrial biodiversity.
• Creating opportunities for ecological monitoring and environmental education.

However, not every plant would be suitable for Churna Island. Some species could spread aggressively, compete with existing vegetation, alter nesting habitats, or disturb the natural character of the island. Even plants native to mainland Pakistan may not necessarily be appropriate for introduction to an offshore island. For this reason, a botanical survey should come before any planting. The survey would identify which species already grow naturally on Churna Island and whether restoration is needed at all.

The Possibility of Coastal Trees and Shrubs

Along coastlines around the world, certain plants have developed remarkable adaptations that allow them to survive in salty, sandy, and windy environments. Some coastal species produce seeds or fruits capable of floating in seawater and travelling long distances before reaching another shore. This natural process, known as ocean dispersal, allows some plants to colonize suitable coastal habitats. The concept raises an interesting question: could Churna Island naturally support additional coastal shrubs or small trees under its existing environmental conditions?

The answer would depend on soil depth, rainfall, freshwater availability, salt exposure, wind intensity, and the island's existing ecology. Trees are not necessarily appropriate for every island. Churna's exposed rocky landscape may naturally favour low-growing, drought-resistant vegetation rather than extensive tree cover. Mangroves, for example, are highly valuable along suitable sheltered coasts, but they generally require appropriate intertidal sediment and hydrological conditions. Churna's exposed rocky shoreline should not be assumed suitable for mangrove planting.

Rather than selecting plants for their appearance alone, the proposal encourages studying which native species could naturally survive and provide ecological benefits without altering sensitive habitats.

Extending the Idea Beneath the Water: Seagrass and Water Seeds

While wildflowers and coastal vegetation could be studied on land, a related opportunity exists beneath the sea. Seagrasses are flowering marine plants that grow underwater. Unlike seaweeds, they possess true roots, leaves, flowers, and seeds. Their roots and underground stems help anchor them to suitable seabed sediments, while their leaves create underwater habitats for fish and small marine organisms. Seagrass meadows are ecologically important because they can provide nursery habitats for juvenile fish, stabilize sediment, support marine food webs, and store carbon in coastal ecosystems.

Some seagrass species reproduce through flowers and seeds, while others spread extensively through underground stems called rhizomes. This raises the possibility of investigating whether seagrasses occur in suitable habitats around Churna Island, how they reproduce, and whether damaged areas could eventually benefit from scientifically managed restoration. However, seagrass seeds cannot simply be scattered into the sea with the expectation that they will grow. Successful establishment depends on suitable sediment, water depth, sunlight, currents, water quality, and the presence of appropriate native species.

Before considering restoration, researchers would need to establish whether seagrass beds currently exist around Churna Island, which species are present, and whether the surrounding habitats are suitable. If appropriate conditions are identified, a small experimental study could examine natural seed production, seed dispersal, and germination. The purpose would be to understand the plants before attempting to restore them.

Attracting Birds and Supporting Biodiversity

One of the most interesting possibilities associated with native vegetation is its relationship with birds. Many birds depend on plants for food, shelter, nesting materials, and protection from environmental conditions. Flowering plants may attract insects, which can provide food for insectivorous birds. Seed-producing plants may offer feeding opportunities for species adapted to consuming seeds. For migratory birds travelling along coastal routes, suitable vegetation can sometimes provide resting or feeding habitats.

However, attracting additional birds should not automatically be considered beneficial without understanding the island's existing wildlife. Some offshore islands provide important breeding or resting areas for seabirds that prefer open, sparsely vegetated ground. Introducing dense vegetation could disturb these habitats or alter relationships between species. A responsible project would therefore begin by documenting the birds already visiting or nesting on Churna Island. The objective would be to support existing ecological relationships rather than artificially attract species that might disrupt them.

How Could the Proposal Be Implemented?

I believe environmental conservation becomes more meaningful when ordinary people are given opportunities to participate. Churna Island is regularly visited by divers, fishermen, boat operators, tourists, students, and researchers. These visitors could become valuable participants in a carefully managed conservation initiative. My original thought was that visitors could bring small packets of wildflower or coastal plant seeds to the island, contributing something to the environment rather than visiting only for recreation.

However, because Churna Island is a protected natural habitat, planting should not take place without scientific guidance and authorization. A more responsible approach would be to organize a supervised programme in which visitors contribute approved native seeds, help document vegetation, or participate in designated restoration activities. The project could proceed through several stages.

Stage One: Environmental Assessment

Botanists, ecologists, and marine scientists would examine the island's existing vegetation, soil conditions, wildlife, and sensitive habitats.

Stage Two: Species Selection

Only locally appropriate native species would be considered. Their potential ecological effects would need to be assessed before introduction.

Stage Three: Small Experimental Areas

If planting is approved, a few carefully selected locations could be used to test seed germination and plant survival.

Stage Four: Monitoring

Divers, researchers, and volunteers could photograph the same locations during repeated visits, documenting plant growth, survival, seasonal changes, and interactions with wildlife.

Stage Five: Evaluation

The results would help determine whether the project should continue, be modified, or be discontinued. This approach would allow the idea to develop through observation and evidence rather than assumptions.

Who Could Participate?

A project of this nature could bring together people from different backgrounds who share an interest in protecting Pakistan's coastal environment. Universities and research institutions could provide expertise in botany, marine biology, ecology, and environmental monitoring. Students could assist with vegetation surveys, photography, field observations, and data collection. Divers and boat operators could help document environmental changes during their regular visits to Churna Island. Fishermen could contribute valuable local knowledge about coastal conditions, seasonal changes, and marine habitats.

Tourists and families could participate in supervised conservation activities, educational programmes, and shoreline cleanups. Environmental organizations could provide technical guidance, while the authorities responsible for the Marine Protected Area would need to review and authorize any intervention. Not everyone would need to plant something. Some visitors could contribute simply by recording observations, removing litter safely, supporting research, or helping protect existing vegetation. The larger goal would be to encourage people to see themselves as caretakers of the island rather than visitors alone.

Learning From Pakistan's Mangrove Conservation Efforts

Pakistan has valuable experience in coastal vegetation conservation, particularly through mangrove restoration along the Sindh coast and the Indus Delta. Mangroves provide important ecological services, including shoreline protection, carbon storage, and nursery habitats for fish, shrimp, and crabs. Their conservation has involved government agencies, environmental organizations, researchers, and local communities. These efforts demonstrate how coordinated action can help protect and restore coastal ecosystems. Although Churna Island's rocky environment is very different from the muddy, sheltered habitats preferred by mangroves, the experience gained through mangrove conservation could still be valuable.

People involved in these programmes understand the importance of species selection, seedling survival, environmental monitoring, and long-term maintenance. I would like to encourage organizations and individuals working on mangrove conservation to consider sharing their expertise with researchers studying Churna Island. The intention would not be to plant mangroves where they do not belong, but to apply the lessons of successful coastal conservation to another important marine environment.

Learning From the Transformation of Kidney Hill Park

One example that strengthens my belief in this proposal is the remarkable transformation of Kidney Hill Park, also known as Ahmed Ali Park, in Karachi. Kidney Hill was once a neglected, largely barren and rocky landscape. Much of the land had suffered from illegal encroachments, accumulated waste, and years of inadequate maintenance. Its dry terrain, exposed rocks, scattered shrubs, and hardy vegetation gave parts of it a desert-like appearance. Yet today, Kidney Hill presents a very different picture. Beginning in 2019, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation undertook an extensive restoration initiative. Encroachments were removed, waste and construction debris were cleared, and the land was prepared for plantation. Thousands of trees and other plants were introduced as part of an effort to develop an urban forest and restore the park's environmental and recreational value.

The transformation was not simply the result of scattering seeds. It required planning, suitable plant selection, soil preparation, access to water, continued maintenance, and the combined efforts of people determined to improve the landscape. Over time, previously neglected areas developed substantial green cover, creating a more welcoming environment for visitors and providing additional habitat for birds and other organisms. What interests me most about Kidney Hill is that its original landscape shared certain visible characteristics with Churna Island. Both contain rocky, exposed terrain, relatively dry conditions, and areas of sparse vegetation.

If a neglected, rocky hill in Karachi could be transformed through dedicated environmental efforts, could a similar commitment help improve selected areas of Churna Island? Of course, the two locations are not environmentally identical. Kidney Hill is an urban park where irrigation, soil management, and regular maintenance are possible. Churna Island, by contrast, is an offshore marine protected area exposed to salty winds, limited freshwater, and sensitive terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Therefore, the same trees and planting methods used at Kidney Hill should not automatically be introduced to Churna Island.

Instead, Kidney Hill provides an example of what careful planning, community participation, and long-term commitment can accomplish. My intention is not to turn Churna Island into another urban forest. It is to explore whether suitable native wildflowers, low-growing coastal plants, and other locally adapted vegetation could be supported in areas where ecological studies indicate they would be beneficial. Perhaps some areas could support seasonal flowers, while others would be better left in their natural condition. The island's existing vegetation, rocky habitats, and wildlife must remain the foundation of any conservation effort.

The transformation of Kidney Hill also demonstrates that environmental improvement does not happen through a single plantation campaign. It requires people who continue to care for the land long after the first seeds have been planted. I believe the same commitment could inspire a carefully managed conservation initiative at Churna Island, bringing together researchers, students, divers, environmental organizations, and visitors. Kidney Hill demonstrates what people can achieve when they decide to restore and care for a neglected landscape. Churna Island offers an opportunity to apply that same dedication to protecting and, where scientifically appropriate, restoring a unique coastal ecosystem.

The lesson is not that every barren-looking landscape must become green, but that every landscape deserves to be understood, valued, and cared for.

A Proposed Study of Seagrass Flowers and Seeds

Alongside the terrestrial planting concept, I propose a separate scientific investigation into the reproduction and possible restoration of seagrasses in suitable coastal waters. This study would begin by confirming the presence and identity of seagrass species in the selected study area. If suitable populations are identified, the investigation could focus on three main questions.

When do seagrasses flower and produce seeds?

Repeated observations throughout the year could help identify seasonal reproductive patterns.

How many flowers, fruits, and seeds are produced?

Researchers could document reproductive structures within selected monitoring areas to estimate seed production.

Under what conditions can the seeds germinate?

With appropriate permissions and facilities, small samples could be examined in a laboratory to investigate germination and early growth. Scientific divers could establish fixed observation areas and photograph the plants during repeated visits. Where authorized, limited samples could be collected for laboratory examination. A university laboratory, potentially through collaboration with Bahria University, could assist with species identification, seed analysis, and germination experiments. This proposed study would not assume that seagrass restoration is necessary or possible around Churna Island. Its first purpose would be to establish reliable baseline information.

Such findings could eventually contribute to understanding the recovery potential of seagrass habitats along Pakistan's coastline.

An Island That Gives, and Deserves Something Back

Churna Island has given me and many others opportunities for adventure, exploration, learning, and unforgettable experiences. Its waters provide habitat for marine organisms, while its rocky landscape forms part of a distinctive coastal environment. Visitors come to dive, swim, fish, photograph marine life, and enjoy the island's natural beauty. Yet I often wonder how much we give back to the places from which we gain so much. We benefit from the sea, the island, and the life surrounding it, but our responsibility should extend beyond enjoying these resources.

Conservation should not begin only when a place becomes visibly damaged. It should also involve understanding what already exists and ensuring that our actions do not cause unnecessary harm. When travelling abroad, many of us make an effort to respect protected areas, environmental regulations, and public spaces. We should demonstrate the same respect toward the natural environments of Pakistan. Churna Island does not necessarily need more vegetation everywhere, nor does it need to be transformed into something different.

It needs to be understood, respected, and protected. If scientific assessment identifies areas where native vegetation has been lost or could be responsibly restored, we should consider helping it recover. If existing habitats are already healthy, our responsibility may simply be to leave them undisturbed. Both approaches represent care for the island.

Looking After What Already Exists

Planting seeds is only one possible way of contributing to conservation. Protecting the life already present on Churna Island is equally important, and in many situations may be the more valuable action. Visitors should avoid leaving rubbish, disturbing wildlife, damaging corals, removing natural materials, or interfering with existing vegetation. Divers should maintain appropriate buoyancy and avoid contact with fragile underwater habitats. Boat operators should follow responsible anchoring practices, while visitors should respect the rules of the Marine Protected Area.

Environmental awareness can also begin through something as simple as photographing an organism, learning its identity, and sharing accurate information about its ecological importance. Before attempting to introduce new life, we should first recognize and protect the life that is already there.

A Small Act, and a Greater Responsibility

The idea behind Wild Flowers and Water Seeds for Churna Island began with a simple observation: an island surrounded by an extraordinary abundance of marine life appeared comparatively dry and sparsely vegetated above the water. From that observation came a question about whether carefully selected native plants could support additional biodiversity on land, and whether the reproduction of marine flowering plants could be studied beneath the water. The proposal is not intended to encourage uncontrolled seed scattering or the introduction of unsuitable plants.

Instead, it is an invitation to explore the possibilities of responsible ecological restoration, scientific observation, and public participation. A small packet of seeds may seem insignificant, but the thought behind it can represent something much larger: a willingness to contribute to the environment rather than only benefit from it. Sometimes that contribution may involve planting an approved native species. At other times, it may involve collecting litter, documenting wildlife, supporting research, or leaving a sensitive habitat untouched.

We visit Churna Island for what it gives us. Perhaps it is time to think more carefully about what we can give back.

Concept note: This paper presents a proposed environmental conservation and research initiative. It does not report completed planting trials or seagrass restoration results. Any future intervention would require ecological assessment, selection of appropriate native species, relevant permissions, and scientific supervision.

Healthcare is a basic human necessity, yet for communities separated from major cities by water, even a routine medical consultation can become a difficult journey. For the residents of Baba Island, located within Karachi's harbour, reaching a hospital often means arranging a boat, travelling to the mainland, and finding medical services that their families can afford. On Sunday, 19 April 2026, Orion Maritime, in collaboration with the United Health Organization (UHO) and the Pakistan Navy League, organised a free medical camp on Baba Island to bring essential healthcare services directly to its residents.

The camp was conducted at GGBS K.B. Ghulam Nabi School (TMC Boys/Girls Elementary School), a government educational institution adopted by the Pakistan Navy League. Doctors, medical specialists, volunteers, and representatives of the participating organisations came together to provide free consultations, diagnostic services, and medicines to the island community. What appeared to be a one-day medical initiative required considerable preparation, coordination, and transportation. Every medicine, medical supply, and member of the visiting team had to cross the water before the first patient could be examined.

The Journey Begins at Keamari

The day began at the Keamari ship and boat point, one of Karachi's important connections to the communities living across its harbour. Baba Island is accessible by boat, making maritime transportation an essential part of everyday life for its residents. For the medical camp, this geographical separation presented the first logistical challenge. Orion Maritime arranged and hired a boat to transport the participating doctors, the UHO medical team, organisational representatives, and the medicines and equipment required for the camp. Boxes containing medical supplies were carefully loaded aboard the vessel, alongside the passengers. With a large group travelling together and an older engine powering the boat, the crossing required patience and careful coordination.

The vessel departed Keamari at approximately 9:45 a.m. and reached Baba Island at 10:15 a.m., completing the journey in around thirty minutes. The weather was hot and sunny, adding to the physical demands of transporting people and supplies. Despite these conditions, the team reached the island with the necessary materials to begin its work. For the organisers, the journey was more than transportation. It was a practical reminder of the difficulties island residents face whenever they need to travel to Karachi for medical treatment. A journey that required significant planning for a visiting medical team is part of everyday life for the people of Baba Island.

Arriving at the School and Preparing the Camp

The medical camp was established at GGBS K.B. Ghulam Nabi School, which provided a familiar and accessible location for the local community. Residents had been informed of the upcoming camp in advance, and many were already waiting when the team arrived. With the medicines and equipment unloaded, the organisers immediately began preparing the school premises for medical consultations. Banners identifying the participating organisations were displayed, chairs were arranged for patients and medical staff, and tables were prepared for registration and medicine distribution. Separate spaces were organised for doctors to examine patients and provide consultations.

The medicines were unpacked and arranged so that they could be distributed efficiently throughout the day. The transformation of a school into a temporary medical facility demonstrated how existing community infrastructure can be used to deliver essential services where permanent healthcare facilities are limited. Through the combined efforts of the organisers, volunteers, and medical personnel, the camp was prepared to receive patients.

Leadership and Collaboration

The initiative brought together organisations with different areas of expertise but a shared objective: improving access to healthcare for an underserved coastal community. The camp was attended by Mr. Nayyar Kazmi, Chairman of the United Health Organization, and Captain (R) Engr. Muhammad Ali Zafar, Vice Chairman of UHO and Chief Executive Officer of Orion Maritime. The United Health Organization contributed its medical team and healthcare expertise, while the Pakistan Navy League supported the initiative through its association with the school and the local community. Orion Maritime organised the camp and arranged maritime transportation and logistical coordination necessary to bring the medical personnel and supplies to the island.

The collaboration illustrated how maritime organisations, healthcare professionals, and community institutions can work together to address needs that extend beyond their usual areas of activity.

A Day of Free Medical Consultations and Treatment

Once the camp began, residents arrived steadily throughout the day to seek medical advice, examinations, and treatment. The medical team included doctors and specialists who attended to patients of different ages and with a variety of health concerns. Services available during the camp included:

• General medical consultations and physical examinations.
• Ultrasound examinations.
• Hepatitis B and hepatitis C screening.
• Pain management and assessment of injuries.
• Paediatric consultations with a child specialist.
• Blood pressure checks and other routine examinations.
• Free distribution of prescribed medicines.

The school courtyard became a waiting area for residents seeking care. Men, women, children, and elderly patients gathered as the medical team worked through consultations. Some patients required basic medical advice, while others presented conditions that needed more specialised attention. The availability of different medical services in one location was particularly valuable because residents would otherwise need to arrange separate journeys to the mainland to access comparable care. Doctors and supporting staff continued attending patients until the camp concluded at approximately 5:30 p.m.

The Health Challenges of a Fishing Community

One of the most revealing aspects of the medical camp was the variety of health problems encountered among the island's residents. Baba Island is home to a fishing community whose livelihoods are closely connected to the sea. Fishing, boat operations, handling nets, and working along rocky coastal areas involve physical demands and occupational risks. During the camp, many patients presented injuries associated with their daily activities. These included wounds and bodily injuries reportedly caused by fishing nets, sharp objects, rocks, and contact with large fish. Such injuries illustrate the physical hazards faced by people who depend on the marine environment for their income.

For fishermen, even a relatively minor injury can become a serious concern when medical attention is difficult to obtain. A wound that could be examined and treated quickly in the city may require an expensive and time-consuming journey from the island. Another notable observation was the number of patients seeking consultations for eye-related problems. Eye complaints were frequently encountered throughout the day, raising questions about the effects of working conditions, sunlight, wind, saltwater exposure, and other environmental factors on the health of coastal workers. Although the causes of these complaints could not be determined from the camp observations alone, their frequency highlighted an area that may deserve further medical attention and investigation.

Children and elderly residents also attended, demonstrating that the need for accessible healthcare extends across the entire community. The experience revealed how geographical isolation, occupational exposure, and limited medical resources can combine to create distinct healthcare challenges for island populations.

The Hidden Difficulty of Living Across the Water

For people living in central Karachi, visiting a doctor may involve travelling by road to a nearby clinic or hospital. For the residents of Baba Island, the same task can require crossing the harbour before the journey to a healthcare facility even begins. The island lacks a fully equipped hospital and reliable access to the range of medicines and medical services its residents may need. When a person becomes seriously ill or requires specialised treatment, families often have to arrange boat transportation to the mainland and continue travelling to a suitable hospital. This creates several difficulties. There is the cost of the boat journey, followed by transportation expenses within Karachi. Medical consultation fees, diagnostic tests, medicines, and treatment may place additional financial pressure on families.

Time is another important concern. During medical emergencies, delays in arranging transportation can become particularly dangerous. Situations involving childbirth, severe injuries, or sudden illness may require immediate professional attention that is not readily available on the island. Weather, sea conditions, and the availability of boats can further complicate travel. For families with limited incomes, these challenges can discourage timely medical consultations, allowing manageable health concerns to become more serious. The medical camp addressed part of this difficulty by bringing doctors, diagnostic services, and medicines directly to the community.

For one day, residents could receive several essential services without first having to cross the harbour.

Beyond Medicine: Understanding the Community

Although the primary objective of the visit was to provide healthcare, the experience also offered an opportunity to observe the circumstances of a community whose life is closely tied to Karachi's maritime environment. Baba Island lies geographically close to one of Pakistan's largest cities, yet the practical difficulties of reaching essential services can make that distance feel much greater. Its residents contribute to the fishing economy, support their families through demanding maritime work, and maintain a community shaped by generations of life near the sea. However, their proximity to Karachi does not automatically guarantee convenient access to the facilities available on the mainland.

The medical camp demonstrated that coastal development must be understood not only in terms of ports, vessels, fisheries, and maritime infrastructure, but also through the wellbeing of the people who live and work within these environments. A healthy maritime community depends on more than economic opportunity. It also requires access to healthcare, education, safe transportation, sanitation, and emergency services. The needs observed during the camp reinforce the importance of considering these communities when planning future social welfare and coastal development initiatives.

The Importance of Medical Outreach to Coastal Communities

Free medical camps can provide immediate relief to communities facing difficulties accessing healthcare. By bringing medical professionals and medicines directly to an underserved area, such initiatives can reduce travel expenses, encourage residents to seek consultations, and help identify conditions requiring further treatment. They can also reveal recurring health concerns that might otherwise receive little attention. The observations made on Baba Island suggest several areas where continued healthcare support could be beneficial, including occupational injury prevention, eye examinations, maternal and child healthcare, preventive screening, and access to essential medicines.

However, a single medical camp cannot replace a permanent healthcare system. Long-term improvements would require sustained medical outreach, reliable access to medicines, referral arrangements with mainland hospitals, and practical emergency transportation options. For an island community, the availability of dependable medical evacuation and emergency care can be especially important. The experience therefore highlights both the immediate value of voluntary medical assistance and the broader need for sustainable healthcare services.

A Shared Responsibility Beyond the Shore

The successful completion of the camp reflected the combined efforts of the doctors, volunteers, organisers, and participating institutions. From arranging maritime transportation and loading medicines at Keamari to preparing the school and attending patients throughout the day, each stage required cooperation. For Orion Maritime, the initiative represented an opportunity to use its maritime experience and organisational capabilities in service of a coastal community. The same knowledge of boats, harbour operations, and transportation that supports maritime activities can also help overcome the geographical barriers separating island residents from essential services.

The involvement of the United Health Organization and the Pakistan Navy League further demonstrated the importance of collaboration between organisations with complementary capabilities. The objective was simple: to make medical assistance available to people who might otherwise struggle to reach it.

Conclusion: Healthcare Should Not Depend on Geography

By the time the medical camp concluded at 5:30 p.m., the school had served as a temporary healthcare centre for residents of Baba Island. The day began with a boat carrying medicines, doctors, and volunteers across Karachi Harbour. It continued with hours of consultations, examinations, screenings, and medicine distribution for a community whose access to healthcare remains limited. Beyond the services provided, the experience highlighted an important reality: living only a short boat journey from a major city does not necessarily mean having easy access to its hospitals and medical facilities. For the residents of Baba Island, the sea is both a source of livelihood and a barrier that must be crossed to obtain essential services.

Orion Maritime, together with the United Health Organization and the Pakistan Navy League, was pleased to contribute to an initiative that helped bridge that distance. The medical camp was a one-day effort, but the needs it revealed extend far beyond a single day.

Access to healthcare should not be determined by whether a person lives on the mainland or across the water. Every community, including those living on our islands, deserves the opportunity to receive timely and affordable medical care.

On 29 December 2025, Orion Maritime Pvt. Ltd. and Bahria University Health Sciences Campus Karachi (BUHSCK) formally established a collaborative partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking an important step toward connecting marine sciences with biotechnology, healthcare research, and industrial innovation. The signing ceremony was organised by the Department of Biotechnology, Bahria University College of Allied Health Sciences, at the Bahria University Health Sciences Campus in Karachi. The agreement was signed by Vice Admiral Ather Mukhtar HI(M) (R), Director General of Bahria University Health Sciences Campus Karachi, and Captain Engr. M. Ali Zafar PN (R), Chief Executive Officer of Orion Maritime.

The collaboration brings together two fields that may initially appear separate: marine exploration and medical science. Yet beneath the ocean's surface exists a vast biological environment containing organisms, microorganisms, and naturally occurring compounds that may offer opportunities for scientific discovery and future medical applications. Through this partnership, Orion Maritime and Bahria University aim to combine their respective capabilities in marine field operations, biotechnology, laboratory research, and scientific education to investigate these possibilities.

Connecting Two Worlds: The Ocean and Human Health

The ocean is commonly associated with shipping, fisheries, marine transportation, and natural resources. However, it also represents an important frontier for biological and medical research. Marine ecosystems contain an extraordinary diversity of organisms that have developed unique biological and chemical adaptations to survive in their environments. Corals, sponges, algae, seagrasses, marine bacteria, and other organisms produce or contain substances that scientists can investigate for potential biological activity. Some marine-derived compounds have already contributed to the development of medicines, while many others remain subjects of ongoing scientific investigation.

The agreement between Orion Maritime and Bahria University is intended to support that connection. By combining access to marine environments with laboratory-based scientific expertise, the partnership seeks to create opportunities for research that would be difficult for either institution to undertake independently.

From the Seabed to the Laboratory

One of the central objectives of the collaboration is to establish a practical connection between marine fieldwork and laboratory research. Marine research frequently begins with the collection of biological or environmental samples from coastal waters, offshore habitats, or the seabed. These samples may include marine vegetation, microorganisms, sediments, or other biological materials collected under appropriate scientific protocols and regulatory permissions. However, collecting a sample is only the beginning of the scientific process. To understand its biological characteristics or investigate its potential applications, researchers must examine it using laboratory methods, analytical instruments, and specialised scientific expertise.

This is where the complementary roles of Orion Maritime and Bahria University become particularly important. Orion Maritime will provide maritime operational support, including assistance with marine expeditions, sample collection, vessels, equipment, and offshore logistics. An Expedition Beneath Karachi's Waters

The speedboat idled off the Karachi coastline while the divers made ready. Below it lay a circle of seabed nobody on board had yet seen, and the task was to discover what it was hiding, document the marine life beneath the surface, and bring back selected samples for scientific study.

The waters surrounding Karachi support a variety of marine habitats, from sandy seabeds and submerged rocky formations to communities of corals, sponges, molluscs, and other marine organisms. Much of this underwater environment remains unfamiliar to the general public, despite its ecological importance and potential for scientific investigation. For Orion Maritime's diving team, this expedition was an opportunity to explore a portion of that environment firsthand. The primary objectives were to observe the underwater habitat, collect water samples from depth, and obtain selected coral specimens for further investigation into their biological characteristics and potential medicinal properties.

Preparing for the Dive

Before entering the water, the diving team assembled and inspected the equipment required for the expedition. Preparations began on the beach and continued aboard the vessel. Diving equipment was checked before the operation, with further checks carried out as necessary throughout the activity. The conditions required particular attention. At a depth of 20 metres, divers experience approximately three times the atmospheric pressure at sea level. Combined with reduced underwater visibility and a water temperature of 20°C, the environment demanded careful planning, appropriate equipment, and awareness of the limitations imposed by the conditions.

The low visibility also made searching the seabed more difficult. Objects and organisms that might otherwise be visible from several metres away could remain hidden until the divers approached them closely. The intended exploration area extended approximately 100 metres in radius from the boat, covering a circular area of roughly 31,400 square metres. This was a defined search area rather than a claim that every part of the seabed within the circle was systematically surveyed.

Discovering Red and Yellow Gorgonian Corals

As the divers explored the seabed, they encountered a remarkable variety of marine organisms attached to submerged rocky surfaces. Among the most striking discoveries were the red and yellow gorgonian corals. Their vivid colours stood out against the muted surroundings, creating a remarkable contrast with the sandy seabed and darker underwater rocks. Some colonies displayed slender, branching structures, while others appeared thicker and more densely covered with tiny polyps. The red colonies were particularly noticeable for their branching forms, extending outward like miniature underwater trees. Nearby, yellow to orange colonies displayed a different appearance, with numerous small projections giving their surfaces a textured, almost flower-like character.

The diversity of shapes and colours made these organisms among the most memorable observations of the expedition. In several places, sand and fine sediment had settled over the corals, partially concealing their natural colours and structures. Only by observing the seabed carefully could the divers distinguish some colonies from the surrounding habitat. These encounters revealed the importance of examining seemingly ordinary rocky surfaces, where complex communities of marine organisms may be hidden beneath layers of sediment.

What Are Gorgonian Corals?

Gorgonians are a group of colonial marine animals commonly associated with sea fans, sea whips, and branching soft corals. They belong to the phylum Cnidaria, which also includes jellyfish, sea anemones, and reef-building corals. Most gorgonians belong to the subclass Octocorallia, whose polyps characteristically possess eight tentacles. Unlike many familiar reef-building stony corals, gorgonians commonly possess flexible internal supporting structures or small skeletal elements that help maintain their shape. Their branching forms can resemble plants or underwater trees, but they are animals composed of numerous interconnected polyps.

Each polyp participates in feeding and other biological functions, while the colony operates as an integrated living organism. Many gorgonians capture suspended food particles and plankton from the surrounding water using their tentacles. Their structures can be particularly well suited to environments where water movement delivers food across the colony. The precise species of the red and yellow colonies observed during this expedition would require closer taxonomic examination. Colour alone is insufficient for reliable identification because different gorgonian species can display similar colours and branching patterns.

The Remarkable Colours of Gorgonian Corals

One of the most fascinating characteristics of gorgonian corals is their range of colours. Depending on the species, gorgonians may appear red, yellow, orange, pink, purple, white, or other shades. These colours can result from pigments and other biological characteristics of the coral tissues and supporting structures. The red and yellow colonies encountered during our dive demonstrated this diversity particularly well. The red gorgonians displayed striking branching formations, while the yellow-orange colonies possessed a dense, textured appearance. The combination of these colours against the rocky seabed created an extraordinary underwater scene.

However, appearance alone does not establish the health of a coral colony. A brightly coloured organism is not necessarily healthy, just as a pale organism is not necessarily damaged. Determining coral health requires additional observations, including tissue condition, polyp activity, signs of disease or physical injury, sediment exposure, and changes over time.

Sand and Sediment Covering the Corals

An important observation during the expedition was the presence of sand and fine sediment resting on portions of the coral colonies. Some of the gorgonians were partially concealed beneath this material, making their colours and structures difficult to distinguish. Sediment naturally moves through coastal environments due to waves, currents, and other physical processes. However, excessive sedimentation can create difficulties for certain coral species. When particles accumulate on coral surfaces, they may interfere with feeding, increase the energy required for cleaning, or contribute to tissue stress under particular conditions.

Different gorgonian species possess different abilities to tolerate or remove deposited sediment. The sediment observed during our expedition was therefore an interesting environmental feature deserving further investigation. Without measurements of sediment accumulation, water movement, and coral condition, it would not be possible to determine whether the observed deposits were causing significant harm. Nevertheless, documenting such conditions is useful when considering the environmental characteristics of Karachi's underwater habitats.

Collecting Water and Coral Samples for Scientific Study

Alongside underwater observation, the diving team collected water samples from depth and small coral specimens for further investigation. Water samples can provide valuable information about the conditions surrounding marine organisms. Depending on the methods and laboratory resources available, researchers may examine characteristics such as salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, nutrient concentrations, suspended particles, and other water-quality parameters. Coral samples can support investigations into taxonomy, tissue structure, associated microorganisms, and the chemical compounds produced by marine organisms. The specimens collected during this expedition were intended for study of their potential medicinal properties, while the broader work also supported an interest in understanding and conserving coral biodiversity.

It is important that coral sampling be undertaken only with appropriate permissions, scientific justification, and methods that minimize damage to living colonies. Careful documentation of sample locations, environmental conditions, and specimen characteristics is also essential for meaningful scientific interpretation. The samples represent an opportunity for further study, rather than evidence that medicinal properties have already been established.

Gorgonian Corals and the Search for Marine Medicines

One of the most scientifically interesting aspects of gorgonian corals is their potential relevance to marine natural-products research. Marine organisms live in environments where competition for space, predation, microbial interactions, and changing environmental conditions create biological challenges. Some species produce specialized chemical compounds that may help them defend themselves, discourage predators, or interact with other organisms. Researchers have identified a variety of biologically active compounds from marine invertebrates, including certain gorgonian corals. Among the compounds investigated are terpenoids, steroids, and other natural products with diverse chemical structures.

In laboratory research, some marine-derived compounds have demonstrated antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, or other biological activities. However, promising laboratory activity does not automatically mean that a compound is safe or effective as a medicine. Further investigation is required to determine its chemical identity, biological mechanism, toxicity, potential therapeutic usefulness, and suitability for pharmaceutical development. The red and yellow gorgonians observed along Karachi's coastline may therefore represent interesting subjects for future research, although their specific chemical properties remain to be established through scientific testing.

Climate-related changes, including marine heatwaves and ocean acidification, present additional concerns for many marine ecosystems. These pressures reinforce the need for careful observation, responsible maritime practices, and continued scientific investigation.

The Importance of Documenting Karachi's Underwater Biodiversity

The discovery and documentation of red and yellow gorgonian colonies during this expedition demonstrate the value of underwater field observations along Pakistan's coastline. Even a relatively small exploration area can reveal organisms with ecological significance and potential scientific interest. Located off the coast of Karachi, Churna Island is known for its underwater rocky habitats, coral communities, and diverse marine organisms. It offers an important opportunity for divers and researchers to observe marine ecosystems firsthand.

For Dr. Raza, the opportunity to explore these habitats was particularly exciting. His passion for observing corals and other marine organisms in their natural environment was intense. However, alongside his enthusiasm came understandable apprehension about diving.

The journey itself was demanding. The long travel, cold water, physical exhaustion, and several other difficulties presented challenges before and during the dive.

Nevertheless, his determination to experience the underwater world remained strong.

Introduction: A World Beneath the Surface

When people think about Karachi, they often imagine a crowded city, busy ports, industrial activities, fishing boats, and polluted beaches. Rarely do they imagine the extraordinary world that exists beneath its coastal waters. Yet, beyond the shoreline lies an underwater environment filled with marine organisms, rocky habitats, corals, fish, and countless forms of life that often remain unnoticed. Through my scuba diving experiences along Karachi’s coastline and around its offshore islands, particularly Churna Island, I have had opportunities to observe this underwater world personally. What I have seen has changed the way I look at our coastline.

Before exploring these waters, I knew that marine life existed here, but seeing it firsthand gave me a different understanding of its diversity and importance. Beneath the surface, I encountered rocky seabeds covered with marine growth, branching gorgonian corals, sea fans, fish swimming between underwater formations, and different organisms occupying spaces that might otherwise appear lifeless. What fascinated me most was not simply the presence of these organisms, but how much life could exist within a relatively small underwater area. These experiences made me realize that Karachi's coastline is far more than a geographical boundary between land and sea. It is a living environment that supports marine biodiversity, provides habitats for numerous species, and deserves far greater attention and protection.

Discovering Marine Life Through Diving

One of the most remarkable aspects of diving is discovering how different the underwater environment appears compared with what we see from the surface. From above, the sea may look like an endless body of blue or green water. Beneath it, however, the environment changes considerably. Rocks form ledges, crevices, slopes, and sheltered spaces. Some surfaces are covered with algae, while others support branching corals and other attached marine organisms. During my dives, I observed numerous gorgonian colonies growing across rocky surfaces. Some were small and sparsely branched, while others formed broad, intricate structures resembling miniature underwater trees or fans.

Their different shapes, sizes, and appearances caught my attention. In some areas, several colonies were growing close together, creating what looked like a small underwater forest. Fish could be seen swimming above these formations, moving between rocks, and passing through open spaces around the corals. Some were solitary, while others appeared in small groups. I also observed patches of reddish and pinkish marine growth covering substantial portions of the seabed, alongside other encrusting organisms and coral formations. What initially appeared to be an ordinary rocky bottom often revealed an intricate collection of marine life when examined more closely.

These observations encouraged me to pay greater attention to the smaller details of the marine environment rather than focusing only on large or easily recognizable animals.

The Remarkable Presence of Brain Corals

One of the most surprising discoveries during my dives along Karachi's coastline was encountering numerous brain corals. I was genuinely astonished by their presence, particularly their remarkable sizes, beautiful natural patterns, and variations in colour. Some colonies were exceptionally large, with intricate, maze-like structures covering their surfaces, while others displayed different shades of brown, green, yellow, and other subtle colours. Seeing these magnificent formations thriving beneath Karachi's waters made me appreciate the ecological importance of our coastline even more.

Brain corals are reef-building stony corals, and their presence is particularly significant because their calcium carbonate skeletons contribute to the development and structural complexity of marine habitats. Large colonies can also represent many years, sometimes decades, of growth, depending on the species and environmental conditions. Encountering so many of these corals made me wonder how long they had existed, what conditions allowed them to grow to such impressive sizes, and how much of this underwater biodiversity remains undocumented. Their presence does not necessarily indicate that the surrounding ecosystem is entirely healthy, but it demonstrates that Karachi's coastal waters support habitats capable of sustaining these remarkable organisms. For me, these brain corals were not simply beautiful underwater formations; they were living reminders of the ecological value of our coastline and the importance of protecting marine environments that may have taken generations to develop.

The Underwater Forests of Karachi

Among the marine organisms that have particularly interested me are the branching gorgonian corals and sea fans. In my underwater photographs, these organisms can be seen extending from rocky surfaces in different directions. Some form delicate, fan-shaped networks, while others grow as long, finger-like branches. Together, they create an environment that resembles a forest beneath the sea. Unlike terrestrial trees, gorgonians are animals belonging to the group of corals known as octocorals. Their colonies consist of numerous small polyps, and many species capture suspended food particles from passing water. Their structures also add physical complexity to rocky marine habitats. Branching colonies can provide shelter and surfaces used by smaller organisms, contributing to the diversity of life associated with a reef.

Seeing these formations made me wonder how long some of these colonies had been growing, how their distribution changes with depth and water movement, and what environmental conditions allow them to survive. I also began thinking about how easily such structures could be damaged by fishing equipment, discarded materials, careless anchoring, or other disturbances. A colony that has taken years to develop may be damaged in a matter of moments. For me, these underwater forests represent one of the most visually remarkable and ecologically interesting features of Karachi's marine environment.

A Coastline That Supports Life Despite Pollution

One observation that has stayed with me is the contrast between the marine life I have encountered underwater and the environmental pressures affecting Karachi's coastline. Karachi faces problems associated with sewage discharge, industrial pollution, plastic waste, fishing activities, and other forms of human disturbance. Yet during my dives, I have still encountered areas containing numerous marine organisms, fish, and coral colonies. This contrast raises an important question in my mind: How much more marine life could our coastline support if its waters and habitats were better protected? The continued presence of marine organisms does not necessarily mean that an ecosystem is healthy or unaffected by pollution. Some species may tolerate disturbed conditions, while others may decline or disappear.

However, the biodiversity I have observed suggests that there are valuable habitats worth understanding, monitoring, and conserving. It also makes me question how much of this marine environment has already changed over time, and how much could be lost without being properly documented. I believe that observing marine life should not end with admiring its beauty. It should also encourage us to investigate the conditions in which that life exists.

Why Marine Biodiversity Matters

Marine biodiversity is important for reasons extending far beyond its visual beauty. Every marine habitat contains organisms that interact with one another and with their surrounding environment. Fish, corals, algae, microorganisms, crustaceans, molluscs, and many other forms of life contribute to complex ecological relationships. Rocky reefs and coral-associated habitats can provide shelter, feeding opportunities, and suitable environments for different stages of marine organisms' life cycles. Small fish may seek protection among branching structures, while other animals occupy crevices or live on the surfaces of rocks and corals.

These relationships help support the broader marine food web. Healthy coastal ecosystems also have economic and social importance. They contribute to fisheries, support coastal livelihoods, offer opportunities for education and scientific investigation, and may provide a foundation for responsible marine tourism. For Pakistan, the value of marine biodiversity should therefore be understood not only in ecological terms, but also in relation to the communities that depend upon the sea. The loss of marine habitats could affect species, fisheries, livelihoods, and opportunities for future generations to study and experience these environments.

One of the reasons I have begun taking a greater interest in underwater photography and field observations is the possibility of documenting marine environments over time. A photograph can preserve the appearance of a coral colony, the condition of a rocky habitat, or the presence of certain organisms at a particular moment. When photographs are accompanied by information such as location, date, approximate depth, and environmental conditions, they can become useful records for future comparison. For example, photographing the same reef area over several years might help reveal visible changes in coral coverage, damage, sediment accumulation, or the presence of different organisms.

Although photographs alone cannot establish the complete health of an ecosystem, they can provide valuable starting points for further investigation. The images accompanying this article represent some of the marine environments I have encountered during my diving experiences. They show rocky seabeds, branching gorgonians, sea fans, coral formations, algae-covered surfaces, and fish occupying the surrounding waters. To me, these photographs are more than attractive underwater scenes. They are reminders of the biodiversity that exists along our coastline and of the importance of documenting it before conditions change.

The existence of rich marine biodiversity does not make coastal ecosystems immune to environmental damage. Pollution is one of the concerns facing Karachi's marine environment. Branching corals and sea fans can be particularly vulnerable to physical contact and breakage. Sedimentation is another concern. Excessive suspended sediments can reduce the light reaching marine organisms, settle on their surfaces, and alter habitat conditions.

Rising ocean temperatures and other climate-related changes may place additional stress on marine ecosystems. During my visits to coastal environments, I have encountered pollution and observed coral colonies whose condition raised questions about possible damage or environmental stress. These observations have made me increasingly interested in understanding how different human activities affect marine habitats. However, determining the exact cause of damage requires careful investigation. A broken coral branch, for example, may result from fishing gear, wave action, anchoring, or another disturbance. Recognizing this uncertainty is important because effective conservation depends upon understanding the actual causes of environmental change.

I believe that protecting Karachi's marine biodiversity must begin with recognizing that these underwater habitats have value. Many people may never have the opportunity to dive and see them personally. As a result, damage occurring beneath the surface can remain largely invisible to the wider public. Underwater photography, educational articles, scientific surveys, and responsible diving activities can help bring attention to these environments. Conservation efforts could include improving wastewater management, reducing plastic pollution, encouraging responsible fishing practices, preventing damage from anchors and abandoned fishing equipment, and strengthening the monitoring of sensitive habitats.

Equally important is the involvement of local communities. Fishermen, divers, coastal residents, universities, marine researchers, environmental organizations, and government institutions all have potential roles in protecting marine biodiversity. I am particularly interested in the idea of involving divers and students in long-term observation and documentation programmes. Even relatively simple activities, such as recording coral locations, photographing the same underwater areas periodically, and reporting visible damage, could contribute to a broader understanding of coastal environmental conditions when carried out consistently and responsibly.

Such efforts should be designed carefully to avoid disturbing the very organisms they aim to protect. Protecting the sea should not be seen as the responsibility of scientists or authorities alone. It is also a responsibility shared by those who use, visit, and benefit from coastal environments.

Questions That My Experiences Have Raised

My diving experiences have not provided answers to every question about Karachi's marine environment. Instead, they have encouraged me to ask more questions. How diverse are the gorgonian communities along different parts of Karachi's coastline? Why do some rocky areas support numerous coral colonies while others appear relatively bare? How do depth, currents, sediment, temperature, and pollution influence the distribution of marine organisms? Are the coral colonies I observe today more abundant or less abundant than those present decades ago? Could repeated underwater photography help identify changes in these habitats?

And perhaps most importantly, what practical steps could we take to ensure that future generations are able to experience the same marine biodiversity that I have been fortunate enough to witness? I hope to continue exploring these questions through diving, observation, photography, reading, and, where possible, collaboration with people who have greater scientific expertise. I do not consider these observations a complete scientific assessment of Karachi's marine ecosystems. They are the beginning of my effort to understand an environment that has captured my interest.

And I hope that through continued observation and documentation, I can contribute, even in a small way, to making more people aware of the marine biodiversity that exists just beyond our shores.

Some coral formations that should have been standing as part of complex underwater habitats were found broken, displaced, or surrounded by waste. Others appeared pale or discoloured, raising questions about their condition and the environmental pressures affecting them.

It was deeply unpleasant and genuinely painful to witness and document these conditions.

For those who have spent time exploring these waters and appreciating their biodiversity, seeing marine organisms damaged or struggling is particularly distressing. The photographs we collected are not simply images of damaged corals. They are records of what we encountered and reminders of why these habitats deserve greater attention. Our observations suggest that the situation at some locations is serious and requires urgent investigation, awareness, and responsible action.

Observing Broken, Damaged, and Stressed Corals

During our visits to Karachi's coastal waters, including the area around Churna Island, we have observed several concerning conditions affecting coral communities. Among these were broken coral branches, damaged colonies, marine debris, and corals displaying unusual changes in appearance. In some locations, coral structures appeared physically damaged, while others were surrounded by discarded material that could interfere with marine life. We have also encountered red gorgonian coral branches washed onto the coastline, including specimens associated with discarded or entangled fishing nets. Gorgonian corals, sometimes called sea fans or sea whips, possess branching structures that can be vulnerable to physical disturbance. Fishing gear can become entangled in these colonies, potentially breaking branches or dislodging entire organisms.

Finding such material along the shore raises important questions about the effects of fishing activity and marine debris on underwater habitats. Other observations included pale coral colonies that appeared to show possible bleaching or tissue deterioration. However, photographs alone cannot always establish whether a coral has bleached, died, suffered disease, or changed colour for another reason. Confirming these conditions requires closer examination and appropriate environmental measurements. Nevertheless, the visible damage we encountered was sufficient to raise serious concerns about the condition of particular habitats.

The Emotional Weight of Documenting Marine Damage

Underwater exploration is often associated with excitement, discovery, and the beauty of marine organisms. Yet not every dive leaves behind pleasant memories. There is something particularly difficult about entering the sea expecting to observe healthy marine life and instead encountering broken coral branches, discarded fishing gear, or damaged habitats. Some of these organisms may have taken years or decades to develop their structures, depending on the species and environmental conditions. To see them damaged, sometimes through activities that could have been avoided, is disheartening. Photographing these conditions was not enjoyable, but we believed it was important.

Ignoring damaged corals would not help them recover, and avoiding unpleasant observations would only leave these problems less visible.

We chose to document what we saw because awareness begins with acknowledging the condition of the environment, even when the reality is difficult to witness.

Churna Island and other coastal locations attract visitors interested in boating, swimming, snorkelling, and scuba diving. These activities can provide valuable opportunities for people to experience marine life. However, problems arise when visitors are not informed about the sensitivity of underwater ecosystems. Some tourists may stand on coral formations while swimming or snorkelling, believing they are ordinary rocks.

Others may touch, hold, or break pieces of coral out of curiosity, without realizing that corals are living animals. Inexperienced divers may accidentally strike coral colonies with their fins or equipment, particularly when they have difficulty controlling their buoyancy. Boats can also damage underwater habitats when anchors are dropped onto sensitive areas or dragged across the seabed. Discarded plastic bottles, food packaging, fishing lines, and other waste can enter the water and affect marine organisms. These actions may seem insignificant to individual visitors, but repeated disturbances can accumulate over time.

A person who breaks a small coral branch may see it as a minor incident. For the coral colony, however, that damage may represent the loss of living tissue and years of growth. Many visitors simply do not know how vulnerable these organisms are. This is why education and awareness are essential.

People cannot be expected to protect marine life they have never been taught to understand.

The Role of Fishing Activities and Abandoned Nets

Fishing is an important livelihood for coastal communities, but certain practices and lost or discarded equipment can threaten sensitive marine habitats. Fishing nets and lines can become trapped around coral colonies, particularly branching gorgonians. Our observations of damaged gorgonian corals and fishing-related debris along Karachi's coastline have reinforced our concern about these impacts. However, it is important to distinguish between visible evidence of entanglement and a confirmed explanation for every damaged coral. Not all broken colonies are necessarily damaged by fishing activities. Storms, strong currents, anchoring, and other natural or human-related processes can also cause physical damage. Understanding the actual causes requires careful documentation and further investigation. Engaging fishing communities in conservation efforts is especially important because fishermen possess valuable local knowledge of coastal waters and depend on healthy marine ecosystems.

Pollution and Other Pressures on Coral Health

Marine pollution is another major concern for Karachi's coastal environment. Plastic waste, untreated wastewater, industrial discharges, oil contamination, and other pollutants can affect marine ecosystems through different pathways. Some pollutants may harm organisms directly, while others can alter water quality, contribute to nutrient enrichment, or increase environmental stress. Sediment suspended in the water can also reduce light penetration and settle on coral surfaces. For corals that depend on photosynthetic symbiotic organisms, reduced light availability can interfere with energy production. Beyond local pollution, rising ocean temperatures are a significant global threat to many coral species. Marine heatwaves can trigger bleaching in susceptible corals, while long-term changes in ocean chemistry can affect calcifying marine organisms. It is therefore important to examine local conditions rather than assuming that every damaged or pale coral has been affected by the same cause.

Why the Situation Deserves Urgent Attention

The conditions we have observed are concerning because coral communities are more than visually attractive underwater structures. Why I Started with a Land Plant

My interest in marine life, particularly corals and seagrasses, has encouraged me to think about how living organisms grow, survive, and respond to their surroundings. Having observed marine environments and the challenges faced by coral communities along Karachi's coastline, I wanted to understand more than simply what these organisms looked like. I wanted to learn what it actually meant to care for something living. However, one question kept coming to mind:

If I did not even know how to properly care for a land plant growing in my own home, how could I expect to understand the needs of corals or seagrasses beneath the sea?

I realized that before attempting anything more ambitious involving marine organisms, I needed to gain some practical experience with living plants in an environment where I could observe them regularly. A plant at home seemed like a reasonable beginning. I could examine its leaves, monitor its growth, change certain environmental conditions, and learn from my mistakes without disturbing sensitive marine ecosystems. At first, I assumed this would be a relatively simple task. Plants need water, sunlight, and soil, so I believed that providing these things would be enough. I was mistaken. What began as a small experiment gradually became a months-long experience involving unexpected problems, repeated failures, physical effort, uncertainty, and, eventually, visible improvement.

More importantly, it taught me something I had not expected to learn: patience.

Seeing My Balcony Plants Differently for the First Time

When I returned home with this intention, I went to our balcony and carefully examined the plants that had been growing there for years. I had walked past these plants countless times. They were familiar parts of our home, but I had rarely paid attention to their condition beyond noticing whether they looked green or attractive. This time was different. Instead of simply looking at them, I tried to observe them. I examined their leaves, stems, soil, pots, and overall appearance, asking myself whether they were actually growing well and what problems they might be experiencing. What I discovered was shocking. Many of our plants were in extremely poor condition. Some had dried leaves, while others showed brown patches, damaged edges, and signs of possible insect feeding. Several appeared old and neglected, their soil was in poor condition, and some of the pots were cracked or broken.

The plants had lost much of their former appearance and beauty. I felt disappointed, not only because of their condition, but because I realized how little attention I had given them. They had been right in front of me for years, yet I had never properly considered whether they were healthy. It was an uncomfortable realization.

I had been concerned about the health of marine organisms living far beneath the sea while overlooking living organisms growing only a few steps away from me.

That moment changed how I approached the plants in our home. I began to see them not as decorations, but as living organisms with specific environmental needs.

The Money Plant: A Problem I Initially Failed to Recognize

Among the plants growing on our balcony were two established money plants. Our money plants had been growing at home for approximately three years, possibly longer. When I first examined them, they appeared relatively healthy compared with some of the other plants. Their vines were long, and they still possessed numerous green leaves. At first, I assumed there was little reason to be concerned about them. However, as I continued observing the plants over the following months, I began noticing something unusual.

Approximately six months later, I realized that the plants did not seem to be producing much new growth. Many of their leaves remained small, and the overall development of the vines appeared limited. The pots were also old and visibly deteriorating, with cracks and weakened sides. I began to suspect that the problem might not be immediately visible above the soil. This led me to investigate the condition of the pots and root systems.

Discovering the Roots Beneath the Soil

After deciding to repot the money plants, I purchased fresh potting material and replacement containers. I expected the process to be straightforward: remove the plants, place them in larger pots, add soil, and water them. However, when I began removing the plants from their original containers, I discovered something I had never encountered before. The pots were almost entirely filled with roots. The root systems had grown into dense, tangled masses, leaving very little visible space for the growing medium. Some roots had even extended through the drainage holes at the bottoms of the pots. When I turned the containers over, I could see roots protruding from the openings.

I was surprised by how extensive the root systems had become. Until that moment, I had mostly judged the plants by their leaves and vines. I had paid little attention to what might be happening beneath the soil. I later learned that plants kept in containers for extended periods can become root-bound, a condition in which the root system occupies much of the available space. Severe root crowding can interfere with water distribution, nutrient availability, and continued growth, although some plants tolerate restricted roots better than others. This discovery helped explain why the money plants might have been struggling despite appearing reasonably healthy from the outside.

It also taught me that the visible portion of a plant does not always reveal its actual condition.

The Problem with Blocked Drainage Holes

Another unexpected discovery involved the drainage holes. The original containers had drainage openings that appeared to be obstructed, and I noticed similar problems in several other pots around our home. At first, I wondered whether the nursery that had supplied the plants had prepared the containers incorrectly. I was frustrated because proper drainage seemed like such a basic requirement. However, I later understood that blocked drainage can develop for several reasons, including compacted growing media, roots extending through the openings, or unsuitable container construction. I could not establish exactly why our pots had become obstructed.

Drainage is important because plant roots require both moisture and oxygen. When excess water cannot escape, the growing medium may remain saturated for prolonged periods, reducing oxygen availability around the roots and increasing the risk of root problems. This was another important lesson. I had previously believed that watering a plant was simply a matter of pouring water into the pot. I had not considered where that water went, how long it remained around the roots, or how the condition of the soil influenced the plant's health.

Seven Hours of Repotting and an Unexpected Second Day

Once I understood the extent of the root systems, I realized that the plants needed more space. I purchased a larger, elongated pot that I hoped would accommodate the roots and allow the vines to continue growing. I also placed a support stick in the middle of the container and carefully arranged the long money plant vines around it. The process was much more difficult than I had expected. The roots were numerous and tangled, and handling the long vines required considerable patience to avoid unnecessary breakage. I spent approximately seven hours working on the plants that day. Even after all that effort, the roots could not be accommodated comfortably in a single container.

I had underestimated how much space they required. As a result, I had to purchase additional pots and more growing material, then continue the work the following day. What I had originally imagined would be a small gardening task turned into almost two full days of effort. I was tired, frustrated, and surprised by how complicated the process had become. Yet I also found myself learning something new at almost every stage. I began understanding the importance of container size, root distribution, drainage, support structures, and handling plants carefully during repotting. I also learned that a larger pot is not automatically better. The container must be appropriate for the root system, with a suitable growing medium and drainage that prevents prolonged waterlogging.

Sprouts After a Long Wait

After the repotting, there was little to do except wait. I had changed the soil, given the roots more space, and begun caring for the plants more carefully, yet for a long time nothing seemed to happen. Some of the pots looked almost empty, with only soil and a few bare stems to show for all the effort, and I often wondered whether the plants had been damaged beyond recovery.

Then, after that long wait, small sprouts began to appear. They were tiny at first, but they were unmistakably new growth, pushing up from the fresh soil that had replaced the old, exhausted mixture. I remember looking at them for a long time, almost afraid that they would disappear if I looked away.

The sprouts made me genuinely happy, because the pots had looked as though there was nothing left in them. A pot that appears to hold nothing can still contain roots and life that simply need the right conditions and enough time. Watching the sprouts grow, I understood that the long wait and the change of soil had not been wasted. They had given the plants what they needed to begin again.

Learning to Water Through Trial and Error

After repotting the money plants, I began watering them and observing their responses. This turned out to be another challenge. Initially, I did not fully understand how frequently they needed water or how the surrounding conditions influenced the moisture in their pots. There were times when I watered too soon and others when I waited too long. I struggled to interpret what the plants were telling me through their leaves, soil condition, and growth. Sometimes I expected immediate improvement after watering, only to find that nothing visibly changed. At other times, I became uncertain whether the plants were recovering or continuing to struggle.

Over time, I began paying closer attention to the moisture of the growing medium rather than relying entirely on a fixed watering schedule. I learned that watering requirements can vary depending on pot size, temperature, humidity, light exposure, root development, and the type of growing medium. The experience helped me understand that caring for a plant is not simply about providing resources, but about learning how much it needs, when it needs them, and how its environment affects those needs. This knowledge came slowly, through observation and repeated mistakes.

Two Balconies, Two Different Growing Environments

After repotting the plants, I decided to place them in different parts of our home. The larger money plant was placed on our main balcony, which received more sunlight. The smaller pots were placed on another balcony where sunlight was less intense. I did not initially consider this a formal experiment. I was simply trying to find suitable locations for the plants. However, as time passed, I began noticing differences in their appearance. The money plants growing in the less sunny balcony developed darker green leaves, while their vines appeared shorter. Meanwhile, the plants on the main balcony displayed lighter green leaves with more noticeable yellowish patterns.

I found the difference fascinating. The plants were similar, yet their appearances were changing under different environmental conditions. In variegated money plants, light availability can influence the appearance of leaf patterns. Plants growing under lower light may produce leaves with less pronounced variegation, while suitable bright, indirect light can help maintain visible yellow or cream-coloured patterns. However, leaf colour and growth can also be influenced by plant maturity, nutrition, watering, and other factors. My observations therefore suggested a possible relationship with light exposure, rather than proving that sunlight alone caused the differences.

Nevertheless, it was one of the first times I had personally observed how environmental conditions could influence the appearance of a living plant.

Moving the Plants and Watching Their Colours Change

After observing the differences between the two balconies, I decided to move the smaller money plants back to the main balcony. I wanted to see whether their appearance would change under the brighter conditions. Over time, I began noticing changes in their leaves, including differences in green coloration and the visibility of yellowish patterns. This was particularly interesting because I had already observed darker leaves while the plants were kept in the less sunny location. The experience encouraged me to think more carefully about the relationship between light and plant development. I also learned that money plants generally benefit from bright, indirect light, while excessive direct sunlight can damage their leaves.

The main balcony's brighter conditions may have contributed to the changes I observed, but I had not measured light intensity or controlled other variables. For that reason, I cannot say with certainty that sunlight was the only factor responsible. Still, the observation was meaningful. I had made a change, watched the plants over time, and noticed a response that encouraged me to investigate further. This was beginning to feel less like ordinary gardening and more like practical learning through observation.

Five Months of Waiting, Uncertainty, and Slow Recovery

Perhaps the most difficult part of the entire experience was waiting. After repotting the money plants, I expected them to improve relatively quickly. I imagined that fresh soil, more space, proper drainage, and better watering would immediately produce healthier leaves and longer vines. But plants do not grow according to our expectations. For some time, there was little visible progress. At certain stages, the plants had very few leaves, and their appearance made me question whether all the effort had been worthwhile. I felt discouraged. There were moments when I wondered whether I had made the situation worse by disturbing their roots or changing their environment.

I had spent hours repotting them, purchased additional materials, and continued caring for them, yet the results seemed painfully slow. Sometimes I felt almost hopeless. I wanted to see new leaves, longer vines, and evidence that the plants were recovering, but there was little I could do except continue observing and caring for them. Gradually, small changes began to appear. New growth became visible. Leaves started developing, and the plants slowly regained a fuller appearance. It took approximately five months before I could clearly appreciate the results of the changes I had made. The improvement did not happen overnight.

It emerged gradually, through continued care, observation, and adjustment.

Supporting the Vines and Encouraging Further Growth

As the money plants began growing again, their long vines created another practical problem. Some vines extended into areas where people walked, increasing the risk of them being stepped on, pulled, or broken. To protect them, I began arranging and attaching the vines along the balcony wall. I had also come across information suggesting that money plants could grow well when supported or trained to climb. This encouraged me to experiment with their positioning. After securing the vines and allowing them to grow along the wall, I continued observing their development and noticed further growth. Money plants are naturally climbing plants. In suitable environments, they can attach to supports using aerial roots and may develop larger leaves as they mature.

However, simply hanging or attaching vines to a wall does not necessarily make them grow faster. Growth depends on several factors, including light, root health, water availability, nutrients, and the type of support provided. Nevertheless, supporting the vines helped keep them away from foot traffic and gave them a more organized growing space. It was another small adjustment that contributed to my continuing understanding of their care.

The Most Unexpected Lesson: Learning Patience

Of everything I learned during this experience, the most important lesson was not about roots, soil, watering, or sunlight. It was about patience. As a young person, I often want things to happen quickly. When I decide to do something, I want to see results almost immediately. I want progress today, improvement tomorrow, and success as soon as possible. Waiting has never been something I particularly enjoyed. But the money plants did not respond to my impatience. No matter how often I checked their leaves or wished for new growth, I could not force them to develop faster. There were days when I looked at them repeatedly, hoping to discover something new.

Sometimes nothing had changed. At first, that made me frustrated. Eventually, I began to understand that growth takes time and that some processes cannot be rushed. A plant may be developing roots, adjusting to its environment, or recovering from stress without producing immediate visible changes. The absence of visible progress does not always mean that nothing is happening.

I had begun this experience hoping to learn how to care for plants, but the plants ended up teaching me something about myself.

They taught me that effort does not always produce immediate results, that mistakes are part of learning, and that persistence can be more important than speed. This was a lesson I needed far beyond gardening.

What This Experience Taught Me About Marine Life

My original motivation for caring for the money plants was connected to my interest in corals and seagrasses. I wanted to understand what it meant to observe a living organism, recognize its problems, and respond to its environmental needs. Although money plants are very different from marine organisms, the experience introduced me to several principles that are also relevant to environmental observation. I learned that organisms can appear healthy while experiencing problems that are not immediately visible. I learned that light, water, growing conditions, and available space can influence development. I learned that environmental changes may produce gradual responses rather than immediate results.

Most importantly, I learned that caring for living organisms requires attention, patience, and a willingness to recognize mistakes. Corals are animals, while seagrasses are marine flowering plants. Their biology and environmental requirements differ considerably from those of terrestrial money plants. The techniques I used for the money plants cannot simply be transferred to coral care or marine habitat restoration. However, the experience helped me develop a more careful approach to observing living systems. Before attempting to understand how to protect a coral colony or support a seagrass habitat, I believe it is important to appreciate how complex the needs of even an ordinary household plant can be.

This experience did not make me an expert in plant care or marine biology. It made me more aware of how much I still needed to learn.

The Results So Far

After approximately five months of continued observation and care, the money plants have shown encouraging improvements. Their leaves have become larger, new growth has appeared, and the vines continue to develop. The plants that once appeared weak and stagnant now show visible signs of renewed growth. The changes are especially meaningful because I remember how they looked during the difficult stages of the process. I also recognize that the improvement cannot be attributed to a single factor with certainty. Repotting, root conditions, watering adjustments, light exposure, and time may all have contributed. The photographs accompanying this article document different stages of the experience, from the initial condition of the plants and their crowded roots to the repotting process and subsequent growth.

They provide a visual record of the challenges, changes, and progress I observed. The experience is still ongoing, and I intend to continue documenting the plants as they grow. There is more to learn about their development, their responses to seasonal conditions, and the care they will require in the future.

Conclusion: Before the Coral, There Was a Money Plant

When I first decided to examine the plants growing on our balcony, I did not expect the experience to become so demanding or personally meaningful. What began as a simple attempt to gain practical knowledge before pursuing my interests in corals and seagrasses became months of observation, mistakes, uncertainty, and gradual improvement. I discovered crowded roots, blocked drainage holes, deteriorating pots, and plants whose growth had slowed. I spent hours repotting them, struggled to understand their watering requirements, experimented with different balcony environments, and waited months before seeing clear results.

There were times when I felt discouraged and wondered whether I was capable of helping them recover. Yet the experience eventually rewarded my patience with new leaves, larger growth, and a deeper understanding of the responsibilities involved in caring for living organisms. Looking back, I realize that the most important change was not only in the plants. It was in the way I observed them. Before this experience, I saw plants mainly as greenery that made our home more attractive. Now, I see them as living organisms whose condition reflects a complex relationship with their surroundings. My ambition to understand and contribute to the protection of marine life remains unchanged. If anything, this experience has made me more aware of the care, knowledge, and patience that such work requires.

I started with a money plant because I did not know how to care for a plant on land, let alone a coral beneath the sea. Five months later, I still have much to learn, but I have begun to understand that caring for life is not about expecting immediate results. It is about observing, learning, making mistakes, and continuing to care even when progress is difficult to see.

Why I Began Observing Aloe Vera

My interest in caring for plants began with a question that had been troubling me as I thought about my future involvement in marine conservation.

If I did not know how to properly care for a plant growing in my own home, how could I expect to understand the needs of corals, seagrasses, or other marine organisms?

Having spent time exploring marine environments along Karachi's coastline, I had witnessed the beauty of underwater ecosystems as well as the damage affecting some of their inhabitants. These experiences encouraged me to think about how living organisms survive, what causes them to deteriorate, and what it takes to help them recover. However, I realized that appreciating marine life and understanding how to care for it were two very different things. Before attempting to understand the complexities of coral conservation or seagrass restoration, I wanted to gain practical experience with living organisms that I could observe every day.

Our home balcony seemed like a reasonable place to begin. Among the plants already growing there was Aloe vera, a succulent plant known for its thick, fleshy leaves and ability to store water. At first, I assumed that caring for Aloe vera would be relatively easy. After all, it is often described as a hardy plant that can tolerate dry conditions. What followed, however, became one of the most challenging and educational experiences of my early attempts at plant care. I began this journey in November 2024, and as I write this article in November 2026, I can look back on nearly two years of observations, mistakes, experiments, and gradual improvement.

Seeing Aloe Vera Differently for the First Time

When I first returned to our balcony with the intention of learning about plant care, I began examining the plants more carefully than I ever had before. For years, I had seen them simply as part of our home. I rarely considered whether they were healthy, whether their containers were suitable, or whether they were receiving the conditions they needed. This time, I looked at them differently. When I examined the Aloe vera, I was surprised by what I found. The pot was extremely crowded. Numerous Aloe vera plants were growing together in a container that appeared far too small for the number of plants it held. Their thick leaves overlapped, and there was little visible space between the individual plants.

I also noticed that their colour was not the healthy green I expected. Many leaves appeared faded, with brownish or dull green tones replacing their usual colour. At first, I did not understand what was causing this appearance. Was it a lack of water? Too much sunlight? Poor soil? Was the plant simply old, or had it been neglected for too long? I had no clear answer. What surprised me most was that I had walked past these plants countless times without noticing how crowded and discoloured they had become.

The plants had not suddenly changed. What had changed was my willingness to observe them carefully.

That realization became the beginning of my Aloe vera experience.

My First Attempt: Understanding Watering

My first instinct was to examine the plants' watering needs. I began observing and caring for the Aloe vera over the following week, trying to understand how much water it required. This was during winter, when cooler temperatures and reduced evaporation can significantly affect how quickly soil dries. At the time, I did not fully understand that Aloe vera, being a succulent, stores water within its leaves and generally requires less frequent watering than many ordinary houseplants. I initially believed that providing water would be the most obvious way to improve its condition. However, I gradually learned that watering should depend on the moisture level of the growing medium rather than a fixed daily routine.

Aloe vera generally grows best when its potting medium is allowed to dry appropriately between thorough waterings. Excessive moisture, especially during cooler weather, can create conditions that damage its roots. Over approximately three weeks, I noticed an encouraging change. The plants began displaying a much healthier green appearance. The brownish and faded colours that had initially concerned me became less prominent, and the Aloe vera appeared more vibrant. I was delighted. I could not say with certainty whether the improvement resulted entirely from changes in watering, because temperature, light exposure, and other environmental factors may also have contributed.

Nevertheless, it was the first visible improvement I had observed, and it encouraged me to continue. For a beginner, seeing a struggling plant become greener was an exciting experience. I began to believe that perhaps I could learn how to care for these plants after all.

The Overcrowding Problem: Giving Each Plant More Space

Although the colour had improved, another problem remained. The original pot was still overcrowded. Several Aloe vera plants were growing together in a relatively small space, and I began wondering whether they had sufficient room for their roots and continued development. I learned that Aloe vera can produce smaller plants, commonly called offsets or pups, around the base of a mature plant. Over time, these offsets can form dense clusters, particularly when plants remain in the same container for years. I decided that the Aloe vera needed to be separated and transferred into additional pots. Fortunately, we had some old containers available at home.

I reused several of them and also purchased a new pot for one of the plants. The process involved carefully removing the Aloe vera from its original container, examining the roots, and arranging the plants in their new locations. I wanted to provide each plant with more space and improve the conditions around its roots. At first, I thought this would solve most of the remaining problems. However, as I continued working, I discovered something familiar.

Another Blocked Drainage Hole

While examining the original Aloe vera container, I noticed that its drainage hole had been obstructed by a piece of rock. This immediately reminded me of the problems I had encountered while caring for our money plants. In those containers, drainage openings had also been blocked, and the roots had become severely crowded. Seeing a similar issue with Aloe vera made me realize that drainage was something I needed to examine much more carefully. A pot may appear perfectly suitable from the outside, yet its condition underneath can affect the entire root environment. Drainage holes allow excess water to escape after watering, helping prevent prolonged saturation of the growing medium.

This is especially important for Aloe vera because its roots can be damaged when they remain in excessively wet conditions. At the time, I wondered why so many of our plant containers had drainage problems. I could not determine whether the obstruction had been present when the plants were purchased or developed later. However, the discovery taught me that inspecting the bottom of a pot was just as important as examining the leaves above it. I believed I had learned an important lesson. Unfortunately, I was about to repeat the same mistake.

Moving the Aloe Vera into More Sunlight

After repotting the Aloe vera, I began thinking about its exposure to sunlight. I learned that Aloe vera generally benefits from bright conditions and can tolerate considerable sunlight when properly acclimatized. Because the plants had previously been kept in an area with less light, I decided to move them to a brighter location on our balcony. I expected that the additional sunlight would encourage stronger growth and improve their appearance. However, the results were disappointing. Despite the change in location, I did not notice the improvement I had hoped for. The plants appeared to remain largely unchanged, and some continued to show signs of stress.

I was puzzled. I had already addressed the overcrowding, changed the containers, and adjusted the light conditions. Why were they not improving? At first, I wondered whether they needed even more sunlight. But I gradually realized that the problem might not be above the soil at all. It might be underneath it.

Discovering the Real Problem: Soil That Retained Too Much Moisture

After further observation, I began to suspect that the growing medium was holding too much water. The soil remained moist longer than I expected, even though Aloe vera generally prefers a well-draining environment. This raised concerns about the condition of the roots. I eventually learned that Aloe vera can struggle when planted in dense or poorly draining soil, particularly if the container does not allow excess water to escape. Its roots require access to oxygen, and prolonged waterlogging can create conditions that encourage root deterioration. I had initially focused on the amount of sunlight and water the plants received, without paying enough attention to how the soil behaved after watering.

The problem was not necessarily a shortage of resources. It could be that the plants were receiving more moisture than their roots could tolerate. This was an important discovery because it challenged my original assumptions. I had believed that providing more water or more sunlight would automatically help a struggling plant. Instead, I was learning that the relationship between soil, water, roots, temperature, and light was much more complicated.

The Mistake I Repeated: Forgetting to Check the New Pot

One of the most frustrating moments came when I realized that I had forgotten to inspect the drainage hole of a larger pot I had used. Despite already discovering blocked drainage holes in other containers, I had repeated the same mistake. I had been so focused on repotting the Aloe vera and giving it more space that I overlooked one of the most basic checks. The pot was retaining too much moisture, contributing to unsuitable conditions for the plant. I felt disappointed with myself. I had spent time learning about drainage, yet I had failed to apply that knowledge consistently. Once I recognized the problem, I corrected the drainage issue and adjusted the growing medium.

The experience reminded me that understanding something in theory does not necessarily mean I will remember to apply it in practice.

Sometimes the most frustrating mistakes are the ones we already know how to avoid.

However, rather than abandoning the effort, I continued observing the plants and trying to improve their conditions.

The Most Difficult Challenge: Reviving a Struggling Aloe Vera

Among all the plants I attempted to care for, one particular Aloe vera became my greatest challenge. Its condition was poor, and I was uncertain whether it would recover. As a beginner, I found the situation confusing. Whenever I thought I had identified the problem, another possibility appeared. Was the plant receiving too much water? Was the soil unsuitable? Did it need more sunlight? Had its roots been damaged? Was it simply taking time to adjust after repotting? I did not know. At times, I felt completely puzzled. I would examine the plant repeatedly, looking for small changes in its leaves, colour, or overall appearance.

Sometimes I thought it was improving. Other times, I worried that it was getting worse. I was particularly concerned because Aloe vera can deteriorate when its roots are damaged by excess moisture, and adding more water can make such problems worse. This challenged one of my earliest assumptions about plant care. I had previously associated dry-looking or discoloured leaves with a simple need for water. Now I was discovering that similar visible symptoms could result from very different causes. A plant may appear dehydrated because its soil is too dry, but it may also struggle to absorb water if its roots have been damaged by prolonged saturation.

The correct response depends on understanding the underlying problem. For me, this was one of the most important lessons of the entire experience.

Why Watering Cannot Solve Every Problem

Before I began caring for plants, I believed that watering was the main responsibility involved in keeping them alive. If a plant looked weak, I assumed it needed water. If its leaves changed colour, I wondered whether I should water it more. If it appeared to be drying out, I believed adding water would help it recover. My experience with Aloe vera taught me that this approach was far too simple. Plant health depends on several interacting environmental conditions. Light exposure influences photosynthesis and growth. The growing medium affects drainage, moisture retention, nutrient availability, and oxygen around the roots.

Temperature and humidity influence water loss and plant metabolism. Container size, root health, and the frequency of watering also affect development. A problem in one of these areas may produce symptoms that resemble problems caused by another. For example, yellowing or browning leaves may be associated with excessive sunlight, inadequate light, water stress, root damage, aging, or other factors. This means that caring for a plant requires observation and investigation rather than repeatedly applying the same treatment.

I learned that when a plant is struggling, the answer is not always to give it more. Sometimes the answer is to understand what it is already receiving and whether those conditions are suitable.

Watching a Slow-Growing Plant Recover

Compared with some of the other plants I had cared for, Aloe vera appeared to grow very slowly. At least under the conditions in our balcony, visible changes often took much longer than I expected. This was particularly noticeable with the struggling Aloe vera I was trying to revive. I checked on it constantly. Sometimes I would visit the balcony several times in a day just to look at it. I examined its leaves, watched for new growth, and tried to determine whether it was becoming stronger. There were long periods when I could see little improvement. I found this difficult because I wanted the plant to recover quickly.

But no matter how often I looked at it, I could not make it grow faster. Gradually, however, I began noticing changes. Its appearance improved, and over time it developed into a larger, stronger-looking plant. The difference between its earlier condition and its present appearance became increasingly noticeable. Today, when I look at that Aloe vera, I feel genuinely happy. It is no longer the weak-looking plant that once caused me so much confusion. It has grown considerably, and its improved appearance reminds me of the time and effort I invested in caring for it. I cannot claim that every change resulted from a particular intervention, but the improvement I observed was real and encouraging.

Of all the plants I worked with, this Aloe vera was one of the most difficult to understand, which made its recovery especially meaningful to me.

Pruning and Making Use of the Leaves

As the Aloe vera plants continued developing, I also began managing some of their older and excess leaves. Certain plants had grown crowded again, while some leaves were aging or no longer in good condition. I decided to remove selected leaves and organize the plants more carefully. Aloe vera leaves contain a gel-like substance that is commonly used in various cosmetic and personal-care preparations. I collected some of the removed leaves and placed them in a jar, intending to make use of them. In the end, I used only about half of what I had collected. The rest became another small reminder that I was still learning how to plan and manage the materials I gathered.

Although I found this part of the experience interesting, I also learned that Aloe vera leaves contain different substances, including a yellow latex beneath the outer leaf surface that can be irritating and is not the same as the clear inner gel. Freshly cut Aloe vera material can also spoil or become contaminated if stored improperly. For that reason, using or storing it requires appropriate preparation, hygiene, and care. The experience made me think more about how plants can provide useful materials, but also about the importance of understanding their properties before attempting to use them.

Learning That Different Plants Have Different Needs

One of the most valuable discoveries from caring for Aloe vera was understanding that different plants cannot always be treated in the same way. I had already gained experience with money plants, which generally prefer a different balance of moisture and growing conditions. Aloe vera, however, is a succulent adapted to storing water and tolerating periods of dryness. Its requirements were not identical. A watering routine that might be suitable for one plant could create problems for another. The same was true of sunlight, soil, container size, and growth rate. Even among Aloe vera plants, I noticed that individuals growing in different pots or locations did not always appear to respond in exactly the same way.

This helped me understand why observation is so important. Living organisms share certain fundamental needs, but the conditions that allow them to thrive can vary considerably. We cannot assume that one method will work for everything.

To care for a living organism, we must first try to understand the particular organism and the environment in which it lives.

Connecting My Experience to Coral and Seagrass Conservation

Throughout this experience, I continued thinking about the marine organisms that had originally motivated me to begin caring for plants. I had seen coral communities along Karachi's coastline, including locations where some colonies appeared damaged or stressed. I had also become interested in the ecological importance of seagrasses and the challenges involved in protecting marine habitats. My experience with Aloe vera made me reconsider how difficult environmental restoration can be. If I struggled for months to understand why a succulent plant was changing colour, retaining too much moisture, or failing to grow, how much more knowledge would be required to investigate and restore a damaged coral habitat?

Corals are animals with complex biological relationships, while seagrasses are marine flowering plants adapted to submerged environments. Their requirements are very different from those of Aloe vera. Coral health can depend on factors such as water temperature, light, water chemistry, sedimentation, species interactions, and other environmental conditions. Seagrasses also depend on suitable light availability, sediment characteristics, water quality, and other habitat conditions. The practical techniques used to care for Aloe vera cannot simply be applied to marine organisms. However, the underlying lesson is relevant.

A struggling organism cannot always be helped by changing one obvious factor. Successful conservation requires identifying the actual causes of stress, understanding the species involved, and considering the wider environment. Just as I eventually learned that excessive moisture and poor drainage could contribute to problems in Aloe vera, marine researchers must investigate the environmental conditions affecting corals and seagrasses before deciding how best to protect or restore them. This experience made me more cautious about assuming that environmental problems have simple solutions. It also strengthened my appreciation for the scientific knowledge, patience, and long-term monitoring required in marine conservation.

Living Organisms Respond to Their Surroundings

Another realization emerged as I continued observing the plants. Although plants do not respond to their surroundings in the same way humans or animals do, they are living organisms capable of detecting and responding to environmental changes. Their growth, colour, orientation, and physiological condition can change in response to light, water availability, temperature, nutrients, and other factors. In this sense, their appearance can provide clues about the conditions they are experiencing. Aloe vera demonstrated this to me through its changing leaf colour, slow growth, and gradual improvement after changes to its environment.

I began to appreciate that plants are not static objects. They are continuously growing, adjusting, and responding to the world around them. This perspective also influenced how I thought about marine organisms. Corals, seagrasses, and other marine life respond to environmental changes in their own biological ways. Understanding these responses is essential when trying to determine whether an organism is healthy, stressed, or recovering. The more I observed Aloe vera, the more I realized how much information could be hidden within seemingly ordinary changes.

Nearly Two Years of Learning: November 2024 to November 2026

Looking back at the beginning of this experience in November 2024, I can see how much my understanding has changed. At first, I did not know why the Aloe vera was overcrowded, why its leaves appeared brownish, or how its watering requirements differed from those of other plants. I learned about root space, drainage, moisture retention, light exposure, and the importance of suitable growing media. I also made mistakes. I overlooked a drainage hole, misjudged watering requirements, and expected improvements much sooner than they appeared. At times, I felt discouraged and uncertain about what to do next. Yet I continued observing the plants, making adjustments, and learning from what happened.

Now, in November 2026, I can see the results of that continued effort. The Aloe vera that once appeared weak and discoloured has developed into a healthier-looking and stronger plant. The individual I struggled most to revive has become one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. The photographs accompanying this article document different stages of the journey, including the overcrowded original container, repotting activities, changes in appearance, and subsequent growth. These photographs are not records of a controlled scientific experiment, but they provide a valuable visual history of my personal observations.

They also remind me how much can change over time when care is accompanied by continued learning.

The Lesson I Will Carry into Marine Conservation

When I began caring for Aloe vera, I was hoping to gain practical experience before pursuing more complex questions about marine life. I did not expect a small plant growing on our balcony to challenge so many of my assumptions. I learned that watering does not solve every problem, that more sunlight is not always the answer, and that the condition of roots and soil can be just as important as the appearance of leaves. I learned that different organisms have different requirements and that even plants of the same species may respond differently to their surroundings. Most importantly, I learned that recovery takes time.

The Aloe vera I struggled to revive did not become healthy-looking overnight. Its improvement required observation, adjustments, and patience over an extended period. This made me think more seriously about the challenges of coral conservation. Marine ecosystems are complex, and their recovery may take years or decades, depending on the organisms involved and the pressures affecting them. Restoration cannot succeed through enthusiasm alone. It requires knowledge, appropriate methods, scientific evidence, and continued commitment. My experience with Aloe vera was only a small beginning, but it helped me appreciate these responsibilities more deeply.

Conclusion: Before the Coral, There Was Aloe Vera

What began in November 2024 as a simple attempt to understand plant care gradually became one of my most challenging personal learning experiences. I discovered overcrowded plants, faded and brownish leaves, blocked drainage holes, unsuitable soil conditions, and the difficulties of managing moisture in containers. I separated the Aloe vera into different pots, adjusted their sunlight exposure, corrected mistakes, and spent months observing their responses. At times, I felt confused and hopeless, particularly when trying to revive one plant that seemed unwilling to improve. But I continued. Today, seeing that same Aloe vera larger, greener, and stronger gives me a sense of satisfaction that I did not expect when I first began.

It reminds me that caring for living organisms is not always straightforward and that good intentions must be supported by knowledge and patience. I originally started this journey because I questioned whether I could ever understand how to care for corals or seagrasses if I could not even care for the plants at home. Nearly two years later, I still do not have all the answers. But I have learned something important.

We cannot truly care for a living organism without first trying to understand its needs, its environment, and the reasons behind its condition.

Sometimes the solution is not more water, more sunlight, or more intervention. Sometimes it is careful observation, recognizing a mistake, changing our approach, and allowing time for recovery. And sometimes, after months of uncertainty, the greatest reward is simply looking at a plant that once seemed unlikely to recover and seeing it alive, growing, and strong.

Before I could begin to understand the challenges of caring for corals beneath the sea, I first had to learn how much patience, attention, and responsibility were required to care for an Aloe vera growing in my own home.

This remains an ongoing observation. I intend to continue documenting the Aloe vera plants, their growth, and their responses to changing environmental conditions in future updates.

A Challenging Day at Hawks Bay Beach

Hawks Bay Beach, situated along Karachi's coastline, is known for its sandy shores and open coastal waters. While it is a popular destination for visitors, it can also provide an environment for supervised shore-diving training when conditions are suitable. Orion Maritime's diving team organized a shore-diving exercise at Hawks Bay Beach to provide young divers with practical experience in open-water conditions. Unlike swimming pool training, where the environment is relatively controlled, shore diving introduces additional challenges, including waves, currents, shifting sand, limited visibility, and the physical effort required to enter and exit the sea while carrying diving equipment.

On the day of our training, the weather was hot, and the sea was somewhat rough. These conditions made the exercise more demanding than anticipated, particularly for the younger members of the team. Nevertheless, under the guidance of experienced diving instructors, the team proceeded with the planned training activity. The objective was not simply to complete a dive, but to develop confidence, improve underwater navigation, strengthen physical endurance, and gain experience in managing the practical challenges of shore diving.

Travelling to the Diving Site

The day began with the team gathering and travelling together to Hawks Bay Beach, transporting their diving equipment and necessary supplies. Shore-diving activities require considerable preparation, particularly when several divers are participating. Cylinders, regulators, buoyancy-control devices, fins, masks, weights, and other accessories must be transported, organized, and prepared before entering the water. Upon reaching the beach, the team began arranging the equipment and assessing the surrounding conditions. The heat was already noticeable, adding to the physical demands of preparing for the dive. Although the sea appeared inviting from the shore, the movement of the waves indicated that entering the water would require care and coordination.

For the young divers, this was an opportunity to experience the difference between training in calm water and operating in a natural marine environment.

Preparing Equipment and Reviewing Safety Procedures

Before entering the sea, each diver's equipment was inspected on the shore. The younger divers received assistance and guidance from experienced members of the team, ensuring that their equipment was properly fitted and that essential checks were completed. Attention was given to regulators, breathing-gas cylinders, pressure gauges, buoyancy-control devices, masks, fins, and other necessary equipment. The team also reviewed communication signals, buddy procedures, and the planned route. Because the exercise involved moving away from the shoreline in difficult visibility, maintaining awareness of the route and following the instructors' guidance were particularly important.

The training was supervised by experienced diving personnel, who helped prepare the younger participants for the challenges ahead.

The Training Objective: Reaching a Point 100 Metres Offshore

The primary objective of the exercise was established by dive instructor Muhammad Ishaq. A designated point was marked at least 100 metres from the shoreline, and each participating diver was required to reach it as part of the training activity. A guiding rope was arranged to provide a reference along the intended route. Rather than sending the entire group into the water simultaneously, the divers proceeded individually, each accompanied by an instructor. This approach allowed the instructors to provide closer supervision and observe how each participant managed the conditions. Haider Raza was the first young diver to begin the exercise, followed by the other participants in turn.

The task required more than simply swimming towards a destination. Each diver had to manage breathing, equipment, underwater orientation, and physical effort while following the designated route. The objective was to help the young divers become more familiar with open-water challenges while working under direct supervision.

Entering the Sea: The First Challenge

Entering the water from the beach proved to be one of the more demanding parts of the exercise. Unlike diving from a boat, shore diving requires divers to move through shallow water and breaking waves while carrying their equipment. Each diver was carrying approximately 23 kilograms of diving equipment, including the cylinder and associated gear. Although properly configured scuba equipment behaves differently once submerged because of buoyancy, carrying and managing it on land and in shallow surf can be physically demanding. The waves repeatedly moved towards the shoreline, making it difficult to maintain balance and move forward.

Fins, which provide propulsion underwater, can become awkward when walking through shallow water. During the exercise, the team used a backward-stepping technique while wearing fins to help manage movement through the surf. Such techniques must be used with appropriate support and attention to footing, since uneven ground and breaking waves can still create a risk of falling.
